Hi there! This are some steps on how to
setup your modem/router
New DSL Modem Available
Embarq is now shipping an updated version of the DSL
Modem called the "660". It is smaller than the older model
(645) and is much easier to setup.
A
few years ago, Sprint/Embarq changed the way their servers communicate
with the DSL modems. The new method is called DHCP, which is how the 660
modem works. The older 645 Modem used "PPPoE". So it's
best to have the new 660 DSL modem.
The
older 645 modem also had the same default IP address as the Linksys Router
(192.168.1.1) - so you had to change one of the addresses to make them work
together.
The
new 660 DSL modem uses 192.168.2.1 as the default IP address. This does
not conflict with the default IP address of the Linksys Router (192.168.1.1).
Note that if you had changed the Linksys Router
IP address to 192.168.2.1, then you will first need to reset it back to the
default address 192.168.1.1.
If
you call Embarq and request the new 660 DSL modem they will sent it to you at
no cost. When you install the 660 DSL modem, you need to be sure that you
power down the old 645 modem amd leave it off at least 1 hour before you plug
in the 660 DSL modem. The Embarq server needs to "forget" the
old 645 modem. After an hour, all you should have to do is plug in
the new 660 modem and everything should start up properly.
Call
Embarq Tech Support 1-877-646-3282 if you have problems setting up the
modem. If the Internet Lights does not come on after a few moments - then
call Embarq Tech Support.

General DSL Modem Tips
For
those that have DSL setup and running, here's some tips....
1. Leave your DSL modem on all the time. (don't turn the DSL modem off when you
turn your PC off). This will speed up access to the Internet when you boot up
your PC.
2. Be sure to change the default password on the DSL modem. (See Info link below on
how to do this - it's simple).
3. Remember to claim your $50 DSL Rebate... to claim it go to www.embarq.com/hsirebate. Do
this about 2 weeks after you have been using DSL - it takes this long to get
your account info setup at Embarq.
How to Setup a Home Network Using a Router to Share a
DSL Modem
If
you have several PC's and would like them to share the DSL connection,
then read on.
Along
with the 660 DSL modem provided by Sprint, you will need to get a Linksys
Router. If you don't have a router you can also purchase the Linksys
Router from Best Buy (a 4-port cable/dsl wireless modem router) Linksys Model
BEFW11S4.
You
also will need to have Ethernet cards in each PC. These are connected to
the Linksys router Lan ports either with an Ethernet cable from each PC or you
can use a wireless connection if you have the wireless Linksys router and a
wireless Ethernet card in your PC.
You
need to setup the TCP/IP parameters on each of the PC's connected to the
Linksys router. The setup will let your computer get the TCP/IP
parameters automatically from the Linksys router.. (Start, Control Panel,
Network Connections, Local Area Network, (right click and select Properties),
select TCP/IP, properties, make sure that "obtain an IP address
automatically" and "obtain DSN server address automatically" is
selected.)
The
steps shown below do not require using the Setup CD provided by Enbarq.
The
660 DSL modem defaults to setup as a Router. There is no configuration
required to setup this device.
First
setup your Linksys Router.
1.
You DO NOT need to change the IP address of your Linksys Router because
the default IP address is the same as the 660 DSL modem is now different than
the Linksys router..
2.
If you are uses Firewall software, you should turn it off while you do these
changes.
3.
Assuming you have your PC connected to a Lan port on the router, open up
your web browser and type the following in the address bar - http://192.168.1.1 Enter admin for the
userid and admin for the password.
In
the "LAN IP Address" under the SETUP tab, change the IP address
to 192.168.2.1.
Change
the "WAN Connection Type" to "Obtain IP Address
Automatically" (It might be set for this already).
Press
Apply
4.
At this point you should re-boot your computer - the Linksys Router will assign
your PC a new IP address.
5.
Your Firewall software will be re-started. If you are using Zone Alarm,
then put in 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.150 in under "trusted
zone". (Firewall, Zones Tab, add, IP range, 192.168.1.100 -
192.168.1.150). It's probably a good idea to also install the DSL modem and
Linksys Router WAN addresses - 192.168.2.1 - 192.168.2.2)
6.
You should change your password for the Linksys Router. Under the
Password Tab, enter the old password (admin) and then your new password and
confirmation. REMEMBER YOUR NEW PASSWORD!
Now
you are ready to configure your 660 DSL Modem.
1.
Plug the Ethernet Cable provided by Sprint into the WAN port on the Linksys
Router and turn on the 660 DSL modem.
2.
After the DSL light comes on steady, it's probably a good idea to cycle power
on the Linksys Router - just pull the plug out of the back of the Router and
plug it back in after 10 seconds. This will allow the Linksys Router to
get a new IP address from the 660 DSL Modem.
3.
Use your web browser and type in the following address: http://192.168.2.1 Type in 1234 as the
password.
4.
You will be prompted to change the Password of the 660 DSL Modem. Its a
good idea to change the password to the same one you used for the Linksys
Router. REMEMBER YOUR PASSWORD.
5.
There is not other configuration required.
6.
You can check to see how fast your DSL connection is. Click on the
"system status" under the Maintenance Column. Next, Click
on the "Show Statistics Button" at the bottom of this page.
Take a look at the Upstream Speed and the Downstream Speed. If you have
3.0 Mbit service, you should see >3000 in the Downstream speed. If you have
1.5 Mbit service, you should see >1500 in the Downstream, speed.
7.
You are then connected to the Internet and all of the PC's connected to the
Linksys Router will be connected.
