I have a Quantum SDLT 320 drive in a Dell 2800 server that has the yellow attention light stuck on. It is performing backups successfully in Veritas and giving no errors from Veritas or anywhere else. Can the drive be "reset" to turn off this light, and how do I do it? The computer has been turned off/rebooted since the light became stuck on, but it refuses to go off.

Sounds like it may be the cleaning light (far right)

You need to use a cleaning tape in the drive (they do expire after either 20 or 40 uses so use a brand new one to be sure)

That should clear the light. If it comes back on after another backup then try using the cleaning tape again and then a brand new tape for the backup.
If the light comes on again then the drive will need to go for repair as the head is knackered.

Try www.tape-drive-repair.com for this as they are pretty good price wise and also offer a 1 years warranty on their drives and repairs

Using SDLT cleaning Tape

When the drives Clean LED comes on, install a "Universal" LTO Cleaning tape, as these drives do not need routine cleaning. Only ever clean a LTO drive when it's requested, as the cleaning media itself is more abrasive than a standard tape.

Quantum ATL SuperLoader

If you cannot physically load a tape into the drive it is a hardware problem and the drive requires service. It is not a software problem.

Of course, the library could already have the maximum tapes it can hold. If this is the case then eject a tape from the library to make room for the tape you want to add.

I hope this helps.

My Drive will not eject the tape

Turn off the tape drive. (Switch in the back of the unit. Wait 2 minutes and then turn unit back on. Tape drive should issue a write data command and then rewind the tape. After rewind completes the tape should eject. If it does not eject after rrewind completes than try holding the eject button for 5 seconds to attempt a "force eject"

Note: Do not repeatedly press the eject button as this can cause damage to the tape and the tape drive.

Stops during boot

First of all the DS20 is an Alpha box not a VAX. The problem here is usually an adress conflict. These tape drives are usually device 500. Try placing the drive onto a different controller card. That should resolve the problem.
