Self propel does not work and it is real hard to push this way. We checked the belts and they both ok. Not sure what else to look at, the on line manual does not show any information

Hi there SmartAlec from NelsonVacuums.com.au here. Ok on this particular machine the belts strtch quite a bit and make the machine very hard to push even though the belts seem to be ok. I would recommend first making sure that the driving self propell is actually working at all. Tip the machine on its back all flat and turn it on. When you push handle up and down you should see a pair of wheels spinning one way then the other (corresponding to the way handle is pushed or pulled). As long as the wheels are moving then it is just that the wide flat belt just needs changing even though it is not broken. If the wheels are not turning at all even though belts are in place then you have a more sinister problem that will require a technition to check over.
hope this helps!
happy Vacuuming :)

Hoover wind tunnel u6445-900. my vacuum seems to have super suction on carpet. You have to DRAG the vacuum and PUSH it with great force to get it to move with the self propelled switch engaged.

It's an issue that the front roller isn't engaged. there's usually a belt connected to the roller on one side of it. That belt is connected to the same motor that develops the suction. You have to find that area and either pull the belt over the motor and/or the brush. Close it back up and turn it on again.

Self propel not working

Make sure the replacement belt was the right one/size.
Make sure the self propelled is on at the handle. If you replaced the flat belt and it still pushes hard the most common problem is a broken power drive cable or actuator arm. Put the handle down and move the power drive handle forward and backward. If it moves freely watch by the headlight for the cable to move the actuator at the base. If the cable is in tact it should move the actuator. If it is broken the actuator will not move. If the actuator is broken the piece of plastic holding the cable will let the cable slide or it may be broken off completely. Replace whichever is broken.
If the cable system is ok and the belt is correct you may have a bad powerdrive assembly. I will include links to correct replacement parts.

Hoover self-propelled windtunnel U6430-900 flat belt gets hot & becomes hard to push. It has a filter bag. Purchased 8/2/01. Took one plate off bottom. Used a compressor to blow out dirt & dust. ...

Belts get hot when fibers from carpet get wound arounf the belts mounting shaft. Best to take a razor and cut off any fibers so the belt doesn't get hot again

On my hover U6616-900 the self propell work fine on the med setting on med height carpet, but when I go to low height carpet and height set on med the self propell does not pull the vacuum and it is hard...

This is a typical problem you are describing. I would recommend you change the belts, this will resolve the "hard to push" and most likely resove your issues. based on the s/n given you maching was made on sept 2004.

Why wont the self propelled brush on the hoover wind tunnel work. large belt is ok. the small belt looks 0k.

no don't do that, have a little patience.check where the self propelled assembly is and see if anything got in there, something might be loose and the teeth are meeting each other.thats a good vavuum.i have 2 but their not self propelled.try taking the belt off the self propelled machanisn and try it again.if it works then something is keeping the propelled machanism from working.dig a little deeper, what do you have to lose?

Kenmore Upright vaccuum self-propel won't work/engage

No, I can't solve it. However, if you go to SearsPartsDirect.com you can find diagrams for this vacuum. There are three. You can click on "View full size", highlight the image, and print it by saying "Print selection" in the Print dialog box.

Perhaps by looking at how the thing is put together you can begin to figure out where the trouble is. You can also order some of the parts for this venerable machine (but not all of them.)

Self propelled function

There are few things that may have gone wrong:
First thing to check is if when pushing pedal it moves gears located on the rear axle (you will have to take cover shell off to see that)
If that works fine then primary belt may be broken (see it here). Then just replace entire set to make sure that belt type matches gears
Last - the most expensive problem - the main transmission belt within transmission is broken (then I would recommend replacing entire transmission)
