Hello, I have a Dell Inspriron 86oo laptop, and want to hook up 2 monitors to it. I want the first monitor to mimic the laptop screen, and the 2nd to be an external monitor that extends my desktop.
I originally had one monitor hooked to the laptop, which gave me a dual monitor system (including the laptop screen), but the laptop screen has since died. I want to maintain the dual screen setup, but don't want to spend for an external video card. Is there any way to accomplish this with some combination of a splitter, PCI, s-vido adaptor, etc? Many thanks if there is ayone out there with a solution.
thanks...I guess I was hoping for a cheaper solution. Anyone else have any ideas??thanks...I guess I was hoping for a cheaper solution. Anyone else have any ideas??

If you want to switch on the monitor, please use the switch on button which wiil be displayed as 'U shaped button. Fucntion keys Fn will not switch on the laptop. Please see the instruction manual to switch on the inspiron. THanks
1. Onboard video card is either disabled or bad. 2. Cable is bad 3. Monitor is bad.
You can check the last 2 relativly easily by hooking the monitor and cable up to another computer to see if they function. if they don't then first try swapping out the cable (i say this first because its cheaper) then swap out the monitor.
To see if the video card is bad try hooking up a different monitor to the system. If the new monitor is not displaying anything then you most likely will need to put a new video card in the machine.
Get some canned air - 2 cans
unplug the monitor and computer.
Use canned air to blow out all the vent holes of the monitor.
Leave it unplugged for about 1 day.
Open the computer case. Use the canned air to blow out the computer. pay
special attention to fans and the power supply - actuall blow the air
through the power supply vents on both sides.
If you have an add on video card (not on the motherboard), remove the
screw at the back of the case, and remove the video card. Reinsert the
card and make sure it is tight. replace the screw.
After the day is up plug the monitor back in and use the buttons on the
front to enter the monitor menu. Choose to reset or factory settings.
Hook it back up to the computer and boot the computer.
If the problem still occurs try the monitor on another computer or laptop.
If the problem goes away by hooking it up elsewhere - replace the video
card.If you are not sure what type to purchase just post back model and
serial of the computer.
If the problem is still there after hooking the monitor up elsewhere,
Try changing the video cable or seek rpelacement through warranty or purchase a new one. Check newegg.com for best prices.

Hi:
Just plugging in the monitor to your VGA port on the laptop won't make it display. You have to toggle to the exteral display, or both. Usually you have to hold down your function key, and then hit the external display key. It could be F1 thru F8, depending on your laptop model. Mine is F6. If you toggle thru the modes, your CRT should display . The missing pin is no concern!
if the screen is flickering it could be a bad monitor. Try hooking up another known good working one if you can. If the known good working monitor works then you know the dell monitor you were given is bad. If you get the same flickering result then make sure you wait until your laptop boots up into windows then try to change the output to the monitor. If you can get a picture then try the other monitor to see if you can get a picture as well.
If you can get pictures with both monitors then you know it was a matter of changing the output on the laptop if you get a picture on one but not the other then you know one of the monitors is bad. Depending on the laptop you have will depend on what key combination is used to change the video output to the monitor.
Have you unplugged the power cord to the LCD? Let it sit for a minute, then try it. ALWAYS buy a UPS and plug any computer devices into it. Doesn't have to be big, a $50 unit will protect it from dangerous voltage surges.
The problem is likely that the resolution set on your computer is not compatible with the resolution set on your monitor. The easiest way to fix this is to hook up your old monitor and manually change the resolution to the native resolution on your monitor. Your documentation will have this info. If that does not work then you would need to reset your CMOS chip by shorting two pins. Input your computer make and model into google for a motherboard manual. It will tell you how to do this. Then it will be at the default resolution and you can adjust it from there.
laptops are very specific about what you can replace parts with. Take it back to where you bought it and ask to exchange for a 14 " If you want to see a bigger picture on that laptop the only way is to plug in an external monitor; in the back there should be a plug for an external monitor. Plug this in to any computer monitor. You will have to adjust the resolution.
thanks...I guess I was hoping for a cheaper solution. Anyone else have any ideas??
