Panasonic PT-53WX53 53" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television Logo
Anonymous Posted on Aug 11, 2009

The green tube is dead.

I received a Sony color rear video projection tv as a gift of sorts from a friend because the green suddenly stopped working. I was interested to know what would it take to fix a color tube on one of these. I don't intend on fixing it but I would liek to know what it would take to fix it.
The other question:
How do I just replace it.. I am looking at it and I see radiation warnings and I have no clue how these come apart. If you could help to point me in the right direction at least as far as replacing it goes, that would be great!
Thank you very much for any assistance.
Sincerely,
~Ken. M

Depending on the type of rear projection tv , these sets normally employ three seperate CRT tubes to give you the RGB output on the screen. Replacing the tubes is not that difficult but does involve some dexterity and care as there is potential high voltages around these areas. Also depending on if it is the actual tube that is faulty as sometime it is just the particular section of the circuitry that goes faulty in this case the Green chroma section could be faulty and not the tube itself.Knowing where to look and to test is what technicians do and advising you further would be dangerous and irresponsible of me. Take it in for repairs and ask the tech nicely if you can observe what he does, you might be surprised and he will allow you to observe. Good luck.

I have mitsubishi vs-50800 i was watching a movie and the screen just all of a sudden went blury and the color is all mixed up i went to the convergence menu and it wont allow me to move the colors left or...

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

I'm having a problem with the color green being distorted on my TV. Is this a color tube issue, bulb issue, lamp issue?

This is a picture tube type TV. No lamp.
You don't describe the distortion.
A colour green picture that is twisted and shifted away from the other colours is a convergence problem. see Projection TV Convergence on this site.
If the green is smeared, out of focus, larger than the other colours like a halo around objects, things like that, it is the green picture tube. Sony has discontinued most of the picture tubes so you may not be able to get this fixed.

My philips 60 in. tv all of a suddon got a green colored line and double vison.

For a rear projection set there are three tubes that work in unison that provide the color image. The tubes must all be working properly. The fact that it happened all of a sudden is usually how televisions fail.

The possibilities are losing the red drive, losing scan to the green tube. If the line is very bright don't operate the set because it can actually damage the phosphorus inside tube if it stops scanning one tube. That is clearly a internal defect and you will require a competent in home service technician. Ask the manufacturer for a referral in your area. If there aren't any try a local shop, they will charge you for a diagnosis but that will be the first required step. The tubes themselves rarely fail but the electronics that drive them can and sometimes will.

Video color

Hard to tell, but my first guess is that the green or blue video amp, or guns on the picture tube have failed.
