The surge protection built into the typical power strip is primitive and the component(s) that provide protection by conducting (shorting) between the hot and neutral degrade with repeated activation. They are worth much when new and after having switched a few times, the voltage breakdown point moves uprange and they become less effective.
Most more expensive electronic systems have better internal protection than that afforded by the majority of the power strips and there might be an internal fuse that blew that can be replaced. I'm afraid however that the main power supply has taken the hit.
The supply is normally built on a separate boardsince these are often out-sourced by set manufacturers.

Unplug your set overnight to allow potentiallyhazardous voltages to discharge, remove the lower back panel of the set so you cansee the guts.
Look for a smaller board with larger parts onit; some cylindrical (capacitors), others block-like and relatively large(chokes and transformers).
You should also see a relationship between theboard and the incoming AC.
Check the board for a label or if not present, astamped-on number.
Call the manufacturer's service center with yourTV model number and the number found on that board and inquire aboutrepair/replacement costs; if both are offered, they won't be that muchdifferent.
If you must buy a new board, don't dispose ofthe failed one as there are smaller companies that can repair it for less thanthe mfr. and then keep it as a spare as this problem will likely arise again.

If you reside in an area of frequent electrical storms, I highly recommend you install or have installed a 'whole house' surge protector. These are either installed in an existing main breaker box or in an auxillary box next to the breaker.
The device and installation labor fall between $150 - $300 US and have an included insurance policy that covers losses of 10 or 25 thousand dollars.

After a lightening storm, my power surge strip got hit and damaged everything that was attached to it (i.e. the internet modem, blu-ray player, and Samsung TV). Our TV only has a blue screen. Help

Yep, power spikes kill. Power spikes kill all. Power spikes kill all forever. Replace all and get a new surge protector that costs at least $99. If you never need it it is called insurance. I am in FL the capitol of lightning. High priced surge protectors are cheeeeep when lightning is there.

Sony KDL 46HX820 turns on, then off and red light blinks four times.

Re: Bravia KDL46EX720. Red LED blinks 4 times and TV wont turn on. What is the problem?

Do a Power Reset.

1. Turn off the TV.
2. Unplug the power cord of the TV from the electrical outlet.
3. Let the TV remain without power for 60 seconds.
4. Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet. (If the television is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, remove it from the power strip or surge protector and plug it directly into the wall outlet. If the issue is resolved, the problem is with the power strip or surge protector and not the television.)
5. Turn on the TV.

If the issue still persists after performing power reset, that may be an indication that the TV needs service. You may refer to this link to locate the nearest Sony authorized service center in your area.

I had a power outage a couple nights ago, which has caused my television to not turn on. It is a Toshiba model CZ27T31, which was off & plugged into a surge protector at the time the storm knocked the...

Please check if your surge protector is working properly now. There is possibility that the surge protector is blown off due to high voltage surge. Check if your surge protector has a reset switch which some of the surge protectors have. If the problem still persists then you have to call the technician to replace the safety fuse which is inside the TV. The cost will not be much. I will personally recommend that you change your TV as it has outlived its life being 10 yrs old.

No power on Samsung TV after storm

Hello Zkarim,

I'm very sorry to hear about your unfortunate new's. I had the same problem in my own home maybe a week ago.

Basically if your power flickered on and off at anytime during this storm then there was a power surge that probably fried your TV.
* First check the power where the tv was plugged in. Is it a power strip or a surge protector ? Surge protectors typically have an on/off switch and a separate reset push button.

If it is a power strip then the tv fried because there was nothing to stop it from happening (not even the fuse). If it was plugged into a surge protector then it could be quiet a few years old and not as reliable or the surge was to powerful for the limit on the surge protector.

The only thing you can do personally is send it in for repair if it's under warranty, if it is not then you can have it looked at by an authorized repair technician in your area. Troubleshooting should be fairly low, and you will at least be able to find out your options once they find the defected part.

Thank you for choosing Fixya!
