Camera only used a couple of times and shows all menu icons on screen but otherwise all black. It flashes like it is taking a picture but shows a black screen upon playback as well. Is worth fixing? I bought the camera out of state so I can't take it back.

the image in the LCD monitor will darken in strong sunlight or bright light. This is normal occurrrence in device CCDs and does not contitute a malfunction. This image will not be recoded when shooting still photos, but it will be recorded wihen shooting movies.Read you owner manual and adjust the MENU, according with your o. manual.Otherwise you must go the repair shop God bless you
Hi David: If you can check menu settings there, isn't the LCD screenviewer issue; then sound like a malfunctioning
CCD (Charge Coupled Device) image sensor... in both cases (LCD or CCD) this isn't a job that you could solve yourself; this wrong

If camera shows Menu item or any on-screen display in LCD but no live view to take picture then it can be either aperture problem or defective ccd imager. And if you do not see any display icon in LCD then of course LCD section is bad or LCD back light is Off for some reason. Try to see faint image in LCD if it is totally blank by pointing good amount of light with flash light or some thing.
Mine has the same problem. I have slapped the bottom of the camera on my open palm a couple of time while it was on and the picture came back on!
Hope yours is as easy of a fix!
I have a sony cybershot DSC-S650, the LCD was very dark and could not
see anything except if I pointed it at a bright object, everything else
worked ok. I could take pictures but could barely see them in playback
as well.
I took it to Sony authorised repair outlet and was told
the CCD was damaged, they charged me USD $55 to repair it (in Quito,
Ecuador)
CCD malfunction, common with Sony manufactured CCD chips. You are in luck, its a free repair regardless of warranty date. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=223&modelid=8044#
