Presuming that you've already tried add new hardware in control panel
remove the drive from the machine. normally there are a couple of screws in the base of the laptop. boot the machine and do a normal shutdown. reinsert the cd drive and reboot.
Often times, all you need to do is plug the device into your usb port and windows will automatically recognize the device and install the drivers for it. Try restarting your computer. Also, there are some external USB devices that require an additional power source to function, so make sure you have the DVD plugged into the wall outlet and into the DVD device.
PC did not recognize internal or external dvd rw. After trying another internal thought it might be the connection on the mobo. uninstalled sp3 for xp. rolled back to an earlier date and now both dvds work great.
I once had a problem like this. It turn out that i just forgot to plug of my external drive. because of the lack of power of the device, it wasnt functioning properly. Try to see if you have two USB plugs, or one Usb plugs with a power cable. Re check if both of the plugs are indeed connected properly.
