Best guess, the bi metallic leaf style switch. The contacts having arced in closing over time became roughened. Till they sorta welded together.
You can find it & simply pop apart. Take a womans nail file or sand paper & smooth the contacts. It will go another 5 years!

Most self stopping kettles have a bi-metal piece, generally in the handle or top part, which, when boiling, gets one side of the metal to expand more than the other, causing it to bend and mechanically turn off the switch.
There are many causes that it can stop working- iron fatigue, corrosion, jammed switch etc that can make it stop working. In general, it wouldn't be financially worthwhile to repair it, however many people still use them when they stay in the room, since they still do a decent job of boiling the water quickly. Typically they have a safety, so the thermo-fuse will shut it before a fire starts- on your own risk.
It's usually not so expensive to get a new one, so I'd go for using it temporarily til I get around to getting a new one!

SOURCE: Automatic switch off not working when water reached boiling.

There is no do it yourself fix for this problem. However, placing a folded cloth on top of the kettle (covering the spout) will cause it to switch off quicker, as it increases the pressure inside the kettle.

SOURCE: water kettle does not boil water

I had the exact same problem. The kettle would warm water but not boil. I bet you have hard water - try putting 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water mix and turning it on. I did this, fixed the problem!

How do I reset the Hendon Richmond kettle?

If your Haden Richmond kettle is flashing all lights and the dry-boil reset sequence did not work, you can try the following steps to reset the kettle:
 1. Unplug the kettle from the power source and let it cool down completely.
 2. Remove the filter and check for any signs of damage or debris. If the filter is dirty or damaged, replace it with a new one.
 3. Fill the kettle with water up to the maximum level mark.
 4. Plug the kettle back in and switch it on.
 5. Wait for the kettle to boil and switch off automatically.
 6. Pour out the water and repeat steps 3-5 two more times.
 7. After the third time, the kettle should be reset and ready for use.
If the above steps do not work, you may need to contact Haden customer support for further assistance. They may be able to provide additional troubleshooting steps or arrange for a repair or replacement of your kettle if necessary.

The switch does not automatically turn off when the water boils. If left alone all the water will boil out.

The switch has to turn off when the water boils as the heat generated must cut off the switch. If this wont work the bimetal is not working and the switch is not responding.
You will need to replace the switch. Please contact the dealership for the spare.

My kettle suddenly stopped working, it still shows a red light when you go to boil the water but the water does not boil. its only a few months old so what would cause this problem

sounds as if you have a lose wire in the base or else you element has failed. Undo the bottom of the kettle and check all wires are connected to the element. If all the wires are connect i would say your element has blown.

Kettle does not automatically shut off even when water is at above minimum level and boiling

I think that standards require an auto-shutoff on electric pots to keep the component from softening down. You could override the shutoff by either taping over the switch or utilizing an elastic band. You can check deep details on electric kettle review sites.

Steam (smoking?) at switch on DeLonghi cordless electric kettle

Either the switch or the wire had a bit of a meltdown. The problem isn;t fixing it , it is getting the right switch. Delonchi is not that bad for support so they might be able to get the switch if you can replace it yourself. If you have to send it away then it may not be worth fixing it if you have to pay shipping etc.

I'd be tempted to bypass the switch and just unplug it like other kettles when it boils.
