I have a pressure washer with a Briggs & Stratton Engine that won't start. I first thought the carburetor was gummed up (it's been sitting), but when I removed the kill switch I tested it with a volt meter. The switch works, but the wire to the coil is grounded at all times. I pulled the wire leading to the kill switch off of the coil (to eliminate the wire itself as a problem) and found the terminal on the coil is also grounded. Does this mean I have a bad coil? My theory is that it's grounded where it shouldn't be, and therefore is generating a weak (or no) spark.
If it is an older engine with standard flywheel ignition (contact breaker inside the flywheel) the coil will be grounded except when the contacts are open and even then a casual test with the average multimeter it will appear to be grounded as the coil resistance is very low; just a few ohms needing the low range of a digital multimeter to measure...
When those engines have been unused for a while it is almost certain the contact breaker and perhaps the condenser will need attention.
If it is a later engine fitted with an electronic ignition module, once the kill switch has been disconnected and the spark is still absent, it is almost certain to need a replacement module unless the flywheel has lost most of its magnetism.

I believe the green wire is a pulse from the distributor and its a ground signal. I could be wrong since is been a while since i left the jeep dealer...I would take the coil out (2 bolts on most) and take it to autozone. They can test it in minutes for free. Either that or the ignition module but more common is coil.

Probably needs a carb rebuild kit. a lawn mower shop can do it if you cant.

95 Evo, new plugs, new wires, started backfireing like a machine gun, front cyl. no spark at plug sometimes - would this be the coil, have not ohmed the coil yet . Thanks
SOURCE: Generator with Briggs & Stratton,no gas is getting in carburetor
The needle valve may be stuck which would not let gas into the carb. I don;t think rebuild kits are too expensive. Pull the carb and take it to a lawnmower repair shop and they should have the parts. Before that though pull the bowl and make sure it has gas in it. If no then remove the fuel line and make sure gas flows from it. If no then could be the fuel shutoff valve is not operating properly or junk in the gas tank is obstructing the line.

if you replaced the coil, check the wire and boot, check with meter for continuity.could be loose connection to spark plug
