1-check sound input source(dvd -tuner-deck)and confirm that amplifier is assigned to sound source-you must check source with it is cabels.
2-check sound output with it is cabels(speakers).
3-if every thing is fine your amp has a problem and needs to go to service center.

Please see the link below for an explanation of Protect mode. Specific to your model, the output transistors are likely to be shorted. This particular model will shutdown the entire unit if any of the channels have a problem. Without actually seeing the unit and taking some internal measurements, I cannot state for sure the parts required for repair. I would expect a parts cost in the $20-$40 range minimum.

SOURCE: The hydraulic flap of my Denon surround amplifier
If you open the front assembly which is the front flap door and fittings, the flaps are controlled to move softly by having it linked to a slow damper piston . This has a piston with a washer moving in a cylinder which reduces the motion of the flap to move very softly aided with the spring tension.
It is possible that this piston damper is damaged and must be replaced.

You really need to read the manual and maybe physically rearrange your speakers for that left / right swap thing. Back Surrounds (if that's what you meant) frequently are the same unless the origianl program material has 7.1 sound.
How did the Test Tones fare?
