There are a huge range of motherboards to choose from. Stick with the well known brands and with the functions that suit your requirements.
My choice of brands are Gigabyte, Intel, MSI.
If you are into gaming and video editing etc. go for a motherboard without a built-in graphics card and purchase a separate high end graphics card.

Could be that the HD is going bad, or it could be a connection to the HD itself.
Reboot and enter Setup right away (probably by tapping F2 as it starts up).
Arrow around carefully until you find information about the hard drives or the boot order. If you see something like "Not installed" next to drive 0, then I'm afraid it's bad news. Double check the connections inside to be sure.
