SOURCE: Have Cobra 29 LTD Classic, no sound when hooked to

check the squelch by turning all the way both ways. check the external speaker socket. if it is the swicthing type it could be either bad conntact or dry joints. try an external speaker to see if that works. another thing is I believe it wont work if the microphone is not pluged in or connection fault there. Good luck.

SOURCE: radio will transmit some of the time

Sounds like a heat sensitive problem to me. See the above listed problem and solution. Also the heat could be coming from over heating even from a high SWR as suggested.

Transmits and receives no modulation out

I am not an expert but I think there can be little or no modulation of the carrier wave unless there is an audio input to the modulator. Like any audio amplifier a transmitter modulator (amplitude modulation) is quiescent without an input.

If the modulation amplifier and audio pre-amp are working and modulating the carrier wave and the antenna is ok then audio modulated radio frequency must be being transmitted.

It would be an extremely good quality CB that had a modulation meter. Mostly all they have is a meter giving an indication of the rf power being sent to the antenna and that rf (radio frequency) power would be the same whether modulated or unmodulated.
The modulation envelope, incidentally, is traditionally viewed or measured with an oscilloscope.

The indicated rf power could be verified using a field strength meter but the only practical way to discover if a standard CB is transmitting modulated rf is to listen to the transmission on a suitable receiver. If the squelch is turned down it will be obvious if the rf carrier wave is being received as the hiss would be silenced. If no audio is received it can be assumed none is being transmitted.

I suggest you try another microphone and lead and if that doesn't work it is clearly a job for a repair shop.

What is Dead Key on a CB Radio?

Deadkey is slang it is CW or Carrier wave which is RF power produced before modulation/audio is mixed in which stimulates PEP wattage slang being SWING WATTS. A Watt Meter is used to measure it which is often a combination device Wattage/SWR/Modulation meter.

The galaxy radio is a 2980 and the RF power does not work how do u fix it or were on the board can I fix it

are you talking about the variable rf knob or do you not have rf power output? check it to a radio next to you with no antenna on the checking radio. and see if it will move the meter.. if it does they change the rf final transistor..

Symptom:Buzzing or motorboating sound in either the transmit or receive.
Problem: TR602 is oscillating
Cure: Replace C602 with a .01uF cap {Cap is located in the power supply board}.
RG 66,99,DX2517 Replace Q54 2SB754 60watt 7A with a higher power 2SB817 100 Watt 12A. Derating of this component will cool operation, provide better voltage stability, decrease wobble, allow voltage increase to 14.5 volts comfortably. (replace 10 volt caps in this section of the radio to a minimum of 16 volts before increasing supply voltage to this level)and provide faster swing rise time, Replace Q37 2SA473 to a 2SA1012-0 or ECG153 this will improve the clarity and volume of the modulation and it will also run a lot cooler.

I HAVE A 2517 GALAXY RADIO IT IS MUFFELD ON TRANSMIT

What is the power output on a watt meter telling you? if it is up above an 8 watt dead key with the rf power turned all the way down, someone has turned up the radio inside and you will ned to turn it back inside to get about a 2 or 3 watt dead key with the rf power turned all the way down on the outside knob on the face of the radio. to do this, you will need to locate the VR18 pot for low power on am/fm and the VR14 pot for high power on am/fm and adjust accordingly, you are most likely overdriving the radio in some way and if you are not familiar doing this sort of thing, then my suggestion would be for you to take it to your nearest electronics repair tech and have them do it for you. It is not a costly procedure and you will be better off to have an experienced tech in there. Also if you are running a power mic on it, try turning it down some or going back to the stock mic to see if the problem persists. If it does while running the stock mic, then most likely it's internal issues like the one explained above.
