Probably has water deposit minerals build up on it. Push and or pull with pliers until freely moves, soak in Lime away solvent ,toothbrush on.

Yes, I believe this unit uses a cartridge right? They do fit a little tight due to the small washers on the back side of the cartridge. If this is the one I'm thinking of, there are two leg like appendenges that come off the back and fit into small holes at the back of the manifold or what some call mixing valve housing.

Sounds like it was installed upside down or the cartridge is installed improperly
SOURCE: kohler shower diverter leaks (behind the wall)
if you have a closet behind the shower or a wall you may be able to get to the diverter without damage to the tile ,are you sure you can't just change the cartridge? most times this is all that is needed to fix a problem like yours.

Keep unscrewing, to the left. Past the point that would normally be the full "on" position for the valve. I've just removed my Speakman Kent shower stem, and because it is damaged where the washer attaches, will have to replace it (both of them).
