We have a Toshiba 50L711U18 tv that is 1.5 years old and the screen goes black as soon as any input device is attached. Without anything attached, the TV boots up and is fine and we can scroll through the Menu. Leaving TV off, unplugged, 30 second power reset did not fix the issue. Looking for help to see if this is something I can repair myself by ordering in a part or if it has to go in for service or be set out by the curb. Hopefully it is something i can do since i cannot afford to replace it at this time. thank you! Also, same issue regardless of which HDMI port is used. Setting the backlight to "0" does allow the TV to actually work for a little while, but eventually the screen goes dark again.

SOURCE: Toshiba 50H81 Re Blinking Light...wont work
Mine is Toshiba 55 TZ, have it since 98', shutdown and red light blinking problem, search the net and found out, generally a Convergence IC (stk392-110) problem. bought 2 for $15 at suburban-elect.com (ebay). replaced following direction from http://www.casiasfamily.com/repairlog/tp50h15.html
Open back cover, 9 screws and wirings (pls mark), removed(soldered) a electronic board infront of convergence ic. removed IC (stk392-110) (screwed and soldered).
Replaced everything and voila...! it is now working again..
no more shutsdown and red blinking light. Saves me $400 for a repariman. of course just be careful with static and stuff.
I don't know how to solder, so I ask friend to do it for me. But I did the rest. Just to give you an idea that it can be done even if you don't know much about electronics. This in no way a recommendation but just stating my experience. Follow at own risk.

My dad and I fixed the TV/Video problem over the weekend using one of the solutions suggested. Make sure you stay away from the red wire running from the back of the tube to the circuit board.
1. Take the cover off the back of the TV.
2. On the bottom of the TV is a circuit board that is mounted on top of a plastic tray. Remove the cables running from the speakers by squeezing the tab on the white plug and pulling them up and off the board.
3. Looking at the back of the TV, pull the board+tray out (barely secured in there) and flip it 180 degrees so you're looking at the front of the board.
4. Desolder and remove the TV/Video push button. It's labeled on the PCB, and should be the second button in from the left.
5. Place the tray back in the TV and make sure the other buttons still remaining on the baord are aligned with the buttons on the front of the TV.
6. Put the cover back and you're done.
TV works as good as new again. Of course I can't use the TV/Video button on the TV itself, but the remote handles that fine. 20 minutes max, and no repairman needed.

Hi, All.
I ordered a new power supply module on ebay. Cost about 106.00 delivered. Came in a few days. I replaced the unit, bunch of screws, all wires were cable plugins, no problems at all.
After reassembly, it worked. What can I say? Sometimes ya just get lucky.

Your symptom sounds like at least one damaged convergence IC.
On Mitsubishi's you can sometimes rework the solder connections on each of these IC’s, although, if the convergence does not fix itself from time to time, you most likely do not have a bad solder connection. You will have a faulty IC. I recommend to replace them both at the same time because the chips legs can fall off due to the heat of the IC.
Please be sure to remove all of the white heat sink compound on the heat sink and apply a even coating over the back of the new IC’s. You should also bolt them down before you solder them in so that you have them at the correct height.
There are two and sometimes three very large IC’s that control the convergence in a big screen set. I believe that your set has two. They are secured to a very large aluminum heat sink. I think that the IC numbers will be IC8001, 80002.
The IC’s are large and black, you cannot miss them. They will usually have an STKXXX-XXX number on them.
This repair from a good technician will normally run from $250.00 - $300.00.
There are several schools of thought on the replacement of parts and I firmly believe that you get what you pay for, so don’t buy the cheapest IC’s that you can find. One company I worked for tried this and it only caused more work for the technicians, as we had to replace them with the more expensive ones in the end. I would think that you should be able to find these for around $60.00 each. If you can find the exact Hitachi part, or Sanyo, even though the numbers on the front are the same, and they look exactly like the $10,00 ones, they are better and more reliable.
I usually order my parts from Andrews Electronics in California, they will have the OEM components that you will need.
Their site is http://www.andrewselectronics.com/welcome.aspx
And their phone number is a 24-Hour Order Desk: (800) 274-4666
I recommend the phone order so you can talk to the person about the different types of IC’s that are available.
You can also try http://www.tvrepairkits.com/ , I have not tried them yet, but they do carry OEM or better parts.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.
If I have helped you, please help me, and rate this suggestion the highest FixYa rating. (Two Thumbs Up)
Please Note: If you can not rate this post with the highest rating, then please do not leave any rating. I am doing this for free and I do not think that any rating other that the best is needed.
If you need further assistance please comment to this post and I will try to help you further.
