I checked the defrost system - there was no ice on the coils and the defrost fan is running. Manually defrosted freezer last week and replaced defrost timer just in case. No change. Freezer is on setting 5 and cooling to about -5 degrees. Fridge setting is on setting 7 coldest and only getting to about 50 degrees. When the fridge side is running, I put my hand by the damper vent at the top of the fridge and I can feel cold air coming in. What else can I check?
Freezer achieving -5 is good airflow at the top is good. You have a return air problem something is blocking airflow back to freezer. Look for a vent in the Fresh Food side along the dividing wall could be as simple as product against the vent. Vent could also be behind crisper drawers. If all of that is clear Pull freezer cover and look for ice or frost buildup in vent.
Testimonial: "Hi, thanks for the tip - I will check that out next time. I actually fixed it a few days ago - I banged on the damper fan vent area at the top of the fridge with the palm of my hand and jiggled it around a bit. That somehow fixed things! It's been working great ever since. If it breaks like that again I'll know the issue is with a stuck damper vent. Thank you,Gina"

you have either a Defrost heater / a defrost timer/ or a defrost bi-metal that is bad. if you post your model # i can look it up and show you how to set it into defrost to see if the heaters are ok
Since you replaced the timer already that leaves two things you need to check set it into defrost if you know how and remove the panel in the back wall of the freezer you should see the heater(s) are on if not check pwr 120vac at the heaters if 0 volts the bi-metal is bad

Check out partselect.com. need to replace defrost timer and defrost thermostat. good luck.
SOURCE: fridge not staying cool, freezer still freezing
The defrost thermostat on the defrost heater is probably bad, it's a good place too start.

Hi, You have a self defrosting problem.
Remove the rear inside freezer panel and check continuity on the defrost element and bi-metal switch. The bi-metal has to be tested cold. If there is continuity on both parts, you will need to change the defrost timer.
The most common part that goes bad is the element. I hope this helps you. Please leet me know if I can assist you further.
