It looks like an MTD mower if you can find model# you might find it. I have a similar rider but it is 2003. Check for number under seat or rear of mower. Check Jacks Small Engines on the internet ask for 1992 Montgomery Wards 42 in to see if you can find number and parts breakdown.

Either the belt routing is incorrect or there is a tensioner which needs adjusting. Recheck your belt installation. Oh, it could be the wrong belt, too.

SOURCE: i have montgomery ward riding mower and cant

Line up the deck where it needs to be, and lower the lever....the hanging links should come close to where they go, then use the pins (or whatever) to insert into the hanging levers....Leave the handle lowered, then hook the belt onto the engine pulley, then line it up with the pulley on the deck...you may have removed the belt guides, so put them back on...They help keep the belt from falling off.
Check your work to make sure things look right...You should be done.

SOURCE: Lawn Mower wont start

You need to obtain a manual for Briggs & Stratten engines. All the info you need will be in it. The most common cause for non starting in these engines is "Tight Tappets" Wether it's an OHV or the old "L" head engine, because they rev and work so hard, the valves seat themselves deeper into their seat which reduces the valve clearance. There is no adjustment on the older "L" engines, so you have to remove metal from either the valve stem, ot the lifter itself. I have in the past done this in situ with a point file, but it is a tedious job. Otherwise you must remove the head and take out the valves and grind the stems. A tricky task and probably should be done by a mechanic.

Idle pulley off a Montgomery ward 16-42 7 speed will work on a club cadet mower

You need to spec it out to know if will. Diameter, Height, offset, and if it V groove or Flat. In most cases they don't swap out that easily as Cub Cadet (MTD) products are usually very picky about these things just like their belt sizes.

Hi i have a montgomery wards riding mower 1990

I might know what the problem is, on those models there should be a ignition switch, or a killswitch under the seat of the mower. When the 2 people sat on it, it might have jarred or broke the switch. You might want to check it to see if thats your problem. I hope this might help.
