Hi fathercuda, This grinding noise you have is it consistant through 1-3 in other words is it just when it goes into gear or all the way through to your next shift? also when in neutral do you hear it and if so when you push on the clutch does it stop? This could be a throw out bearing or sincro mesh problem, I am leaning towards the throw out bearing, not a hard fix but a bit of work involved please get back to me with the requested information and see if we can resolve this issue for you good luck

the way I understand this question, is that you were driving when the engine locked up. In that case, I would say that you have blown the engine, and you are hearing your starter spin on the flywheel because the engine will not crank over.

Yes, 5100 means the carriage is not moving back and forth properly or there is grease on the encoder strip behind the carriage assembly. Grease spots make it lose count and slam into the side and grind gears. You need to clean the strip with a Q-tip moist with alcohol, but very carefully, not too much pressure on the strip.

Try some WD40 on the silver shafts that the carrier slides on they do get very gummy.
