rtfm.
Once the setting for progressive scan output is entered,
an image will only be visible on a progressive scan
compatible TV or monitor. If you set Progressive Scan
to On in error, you must reset the unit.
1) Remove any disc from the unit and close the disc
tray. See that "NO DISC" is displayed on the display
window.
2) Press STOP and hold it for five seconds before
releasing it. The video output will be restored to the
standard setting and a picture will once again be visi-
ble on a conventional analog TV or monitor.

Try using the I/P button on the remote. Toggle between S-video, RCA and composite video outputs.

SOURCE: DVD tray in SD-V296 will not open

Hi!

Thank you. Yes, we did solve the problem; in fact, it was the way we had solved it one other time, even though I had believed it a fluke then:
we simply disconnected the unit for a couple of hours, plugged it back in and, just as last time, the tray opened easily.

Sincerely,

Dean Hunt

SOURCE: Won't play DVDs.

My problem is just the opposite; the DVD player is fine, but the VCR starts and then powers off the machine.

Model# SD-V296-K-TU Is this DVD player region free?

I do not believe this is a region-free DVD player. I believe it only plays Region 1 or All commercial discs. The manual for the SD-V296 is available from Toshiba here: http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/manuals/userguides/su2810535/SD-V296_OM.pdf .

I hope this helps.

Are the SD-V296 and the SD-V296KU the same. My instructions on the KU does not say you can copy from VHS to DVD. Reviews I have read says the SD-V296 does copy from VHS to DVD.

Neither of these units can record to DVD; they are DVD players. I believe they are the same unit (the extra letters indicate a region code for the player).

The manual for the SD-V296KU is available from Toshiba here: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=2805081&rpn=undefined&modelFilter=SD-V296KU&selCategory=2797338&selFamily=2797344 .

I hope this helps.
