5710 Viking machine stuck on one stitch length. Zigzag stitch ok. The stitches are very small. Why is it stuck and how do I fix it.

It may be as simple as the dial is set to buttonholes which makes a short stitch and the zig zag would be small.

You can do all of these stitches by using different combinations of your stitch selector, stitch width and stitch feed knobs, for instance, on the panel I can see on your machine:

Stitches 1, 2 & 3 are straight stitches, centered, left and right. Really basic stuff, not different stitches at all. 4,5,6,7 & 8 are zig-zag stitches of different widths. 9 is the widest zig-zag (no. 8) on a finer stitch length, etc...

I think you should try and get an instruction manual for your machine. After a lengthy search of my usual manual sources, I've determined that that this may not be so easy. I think you should contact White on their 800 number and let them try and help you... 1-800-331-3164.

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I finally figured out that I had the straight stitch needle plate (the one with the single hole), rather than the zig zag needle plate (the one with the curved hole). When I changed plates, it worked fine.

Remove the top cover (grasp and lift straight up), spray with "Tri-Flow, liberally inside. Pay attention to the right 1/2 and behind the front dials.

In Front, each dial has a small square opening on the side, use the tube included with the "Tri-flow" to squirt lube inside them. DO NOT use WD-40.

Run the machine daily for 5-10 minutes (set the dial "C" [top front that goes up to 8] to 0 also set the dial on top of the case to 0. Move the Zig-Zag lever (upper right) from 0 to 4 and back again. Respray with Tri-flow. After a couple of days, if it is still stuck place a hair-dryer or light nearby to warm it up to skin temp.

Between the temp and the oil, it should begin working.

machine shop to see what's wrong with the cam's or gear
that makes the stitches

Viking/Husqvarna 5710 sewing machine is stuck in reverse. Reverse button isn't stuck, but doesn't pop out by itself anymore. Stitch dial isn't in between stitches. Put wd40 in the insides, didn't help
Uh-oh. Don't use WD-40 on your machine... WD-40 becomes sticky with time and will seize the mechanics...

Wondering if there is a spring under the R button that perhaps is broken or collapsed.

Singer 6510 3 dial machine - no "S" on stitch length dial selector
Lower numbers moves the fabric further for each time the needle penetrates the fabric. . If you raise the number you will get more stitches per inch which means your fabric is moving more slowly. Try moving the number to different locations for examples. If you are attempting to make something so it will stretch you are probably wanting to use a zigzag stitch. A wide zigzag stitch will allow a longer stretch than a less wide zigzag stitch.

I would like to know how to set the machine up for polyester/spandex material
You need a ball point size 70 or a jersey 70 if you can get it. Stitch length 2.3 to 2.5. Re tension, just normal tension setting. If the machine is sewing an evenly balanced zigzag on regular cotton fabric, then tension is fine. If you find the straight stitch on your fabric pops under stretch, then try using a very small zigzag to put some flexability into the seam.

Size of stitch
Sounds like malfunction with the feeddogs or stitch length balance. Without thread or fabric, turn the handwheel and watch the feeddogs (the toothy looking things under the presser foot which moves the fabric as you sew). The amount of distance they move with each revolution of the handwheel determines the stitch length. Watch to see whether they move from front to back. It may be that they are worn out or that they are just too low to adequately move the fabric as you sew. Take to authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer for repair. This is not something that can be done by the owner. Check Husqvarna Viking website for dealer closest too you.
