Sony have used integrated circuit type output modules for lots of years and the best of this type of output has overload/overheat protection but mostly cheaper variants are used that don't tolerate overload very well.

The sound can only come out of the speakers when the amplifier provides the electrical signal that is in reality the processed power supplied by the power supply. The bigger the sound, the more power has to be supplied and processed and while most domestic hi-fi will tolerate a brief overload, because mass market manufacturers don't make things any better than they need to be, lots of heat will very quickly be generated in several parts of the circuit often leading to the sort of failure needing attention from a repair shop.

If you are lucky the cost will be less than the price of a replacement...

SOURCE: Receiver shuts off when I turn up spund past 66db (max)

What receiver do you have? Some receivers do this as a protection mechanism if something is shorting. does it turn off if you disconnect all of the speakers and turn it up? If not, then you most likely have some wires touching each other or something else, or you may have a speaker that is blown or shorted. If it still shuts off them most likely there is something wrong internally, and if thats the case your best bet would be to return it or take it into a professional. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: mini stereo system shuts off when i turn the volume up, what's wrong with it?

The problem is in the audio output ic, or bad solder contacts, check to make sure there are no bare speaker wires showing, and if by chance you added additional speakers, then that is the problem and should be removed.

Testimonial: "hey there John! thanks so much!! I just went to the back of my stereo and pushed in the speaker wires in a bit more and there's been no problems ever since! I also fixed my extended wiring, i have two speakers that I have extended with extra speaker wire, but yeah my stereo was working fine even before i did that, it was simply a matter of putting them in right on the one side- the wires for the one speaker was really poked in all the way! Thank so much again John!! Saved me a trip to the repair shop!! I'm recommend this site to all my friends!!"

I have a jvc CA-MXKA6 stereo in my room. When I turn the volume up to 12 PROTECT comes up on the screen, the stereo makes a click noise, and the sound stops playing. Then about 5 sec. later the audio trys...

The click is a relay. The 12 position is obviously past the max you should be applying. Keep it below that and you should be fine. Quite often the 12 or 1 position is the max output for a receiver. It depends on a lot of different factors but in your setup 12 is It.
