SOURCE: Refill ink Cartridge

see link:
http://www.hstt.net/refill-faq/brother.html#LC-1000%20-%20Doku

(the lc1000 is the same as the lc51)

Refill a max of 12ml for Y/C/M and 20ml for bk.

BTW
brother has changed the inside of the carts. So plz check carefully the pics if your cart looks the same. If it looks different you should drill the hole near the upper valve (the one with the white plastic)!

SOURCE: instructions on refilling cartridge for brother LC41CL cartridge

Do mix the ink with some glycerol to prevent clogging!

2ml glycerol (85%-glycerin alc. from drugstore) with 10ml of ink for C/Y/M and shake well (mix) before use. Mix 1,5 ml glycerol with 20ml BK ink.

Simply drill a hole into the brandname (O of brother) on top of the cart. Refill with 12ml for C/Y/M and about 21ml for bk.

You can leave the hole open.

Next time when cart is empty simply open scanner and refill without taking the cart out! ;-)

DO MIX THE INK WITH GLYCEROL!!!

OK.. I agree that your problem is with the flag gear. However, there is a specific location in which it needs to be situated. The purpose of the flag gear is to trip a reset actuator on the left side of the printer. The correct position of the flag gear needs to be set so the reset actuator is depressed 3/4 of the way AND where the flag gear moves out of the way once this is done. If the flag gear is moved all the way forward, you run a risk of the gear mechanism inside not rotating it out of the way...which could leave you with a 'no cartridge installed' message. When the manufacturer of the toner cartridge made this unit, they decided to put a mark on the side to, evidently, let the assembly team know where to set the flag gear. Great for us :) On the outside plastic piece that you have to remove to get to the flag gear, you will see a diagonal line and a view window. When you rotate the flag gear, you will eventually see a portion of the white gear in that view window. Line up the white gear portion with the bottom of the diagonal line (typically two gear teeth), and you're done. Assemble and run!

SOURCE: Brother Toner Refills

Yeah you can refill your cartridge. It is really easy and consists of removing the plug on the side of the cartridge, dumping out any old toner and dumping in the new toner. Its very easy. I have purchased refill kits from both of these sites in the past and its worked great:

www.tonerrefillstore.com

www.lasertekservices.com

They also have great customer service. I hope this helps!

Brother MFC-7420: Toner low - massege. But catridge is full.

The magic word is "refilled." Not all refilled cartridges work correctly. Try another cartridge (a new one to be absolutely sure) to verify the printer is working properly. But my money would be on "defective refill."

How to refill Brother MFC 420CN ink cartridge?

I wouldn't recommend refilling cartridges anymore. Nowadays printers come with a sensor which tell it which cartridges were used and refilled. Also do not use generic cartridges. Always buy genuine cartridges. Will save you a lot of headache in the long run...Trust me.

How to Override Ink Level Gauge When Using Refilled Cartridges

Above link great.
If you have a newer print cartridge cart, look for the little window. I put a sticker over the little window on the Brother (innobella) LC38 cartridge cart and it worked great :)
Despite finding a fix for this problem, I think this is a rip off setting on the brother printers and I will never buy another Brother printer for this reason.

Brother DCP 115C

Buy "compatible" or "alternative" cartridges, they are cheap and cleaner than refilling the cartridges by yourself.
