I been trying with a screwdriver.

get a pair of nail clippers with the pick thingy inside it (the part thats used to clean dirt out of nails) insert the pick with the nose part sticking up then keep sliding it back and forth while turning left at the same time. it will take a few times but the lock will get loose and then turn to the left - to re lock it do the the same thing but oposite!

Give the locking "jaws" a good dose of WD-40 and start with a pair of pliers ans working the door handle get the "jaws" moving and work it a lot while keep dousing it with the lubricant. Worst case scenario would be that the spring that opens the jaws is broken and will need replaced. Please rate this answer, thanks.

hold the door handle in the up position as though you were opening the dor at the same time you move latch assemblt open.

The fault sounds like its the catch at fault, I would recomend replacing, if you can open tgailgate, operate the unlock funcion using key and try and move the catch position

i was having the same type of problem. we just put a couple of washers behind the latch and then adjusted the latch and it solved our problem.
