Digital Camera: How to Fix Compact Flash Memory Cards ErrorIt is not very typical for compact flash memory cards to give you an error. If you do receive an error, it most likely means that a pin within your CF card slot is bent, or your CF card has become corrupted. Unfortunately, if your CF card has become corrupted, you will need to reformat the memory card, which means that you may lose any pictures that were located on the card. Fixing Your Flash Memory Card
You will want to remove your CF card and the batteries. Take a look inside the CF card slot to see if there is a bent pin. If you find a bent pin, you can correct this problem using a very small and skinny flat screwdriver. Moving very slowly, use the screwdriver to bend the pin back into place. You do not want to use enough force to make the pin back in one shot. The pin does not have to be perfectly straight, but get it as close to straight as possible. Insert your CF card back into the slow very slowly. You should see the in align itself with the card. You can turn your digital camera on to verify that the compact flash memory card is now working.
First, remove the card, and look in the slot for any bent flash card pins. If you see any, don't fret, it's possible that you can fix this yourself. See this article on how to unbend flash card pins.
But if no pent pins are seen, then the camera's clock battery has worn out, and is likely causing this problem. Unfortunately this battery is internal to the camera. But Canon will fix this for you (for the S400 only) for free, with free shipping. Please see the Canon advisory for your camera here.
Take a look inside your camera's CF card slot. I suspect that you may have a bent pin in there. If so, don't fret. Although professional repair would be more costly than the value of the camera, there is a very good chance that you can repair this yourself. Please see this.
Actually you should be able to do it yourself (professional repair will be more than the value of the camera). The following webpage lists repair techniques for a bent flash card pin. It's not difficult to do, just takes some patience:
I had the same problem; I could insert the card but it wouldn't read. I Got a CF error message. I was going to get it fixed then I realised that the bent pin was touching the adjacent pin. So I intentionally broke-off the damaged pin... an now it works perfectly! Many of the pins on CF cards don't appear to function.
Obviously, only do this if the pins are touching and you can't bent the pin back straight. You could make thing worse by rummaging aroung the CF slot, but as I was going to send it away anyway, at some considerable cost, I had nothing to lose.
Bet you have a bent flash card pin. Remove the card and look in the slot for a bent pin. If so, remain calm as you might be able to fix it. Remove the camera batteries and card. Use a small/skinny jeweler's flat screwdriver to bend the pin back as close as possible. Take your time and use as much patience as you can muster (take a breather in between if needed).
It doesn't have to be perfect, just as close as you can get it. When it's there, take your flash card and "SLOWLY" insert it. The card itself should fine-align the pin. Remove the card, and verify that the pin is still straightened. If so, reinsert the card and try it out.
Hi, I kept getting a "memory card error" on my Canon PowerShot S500 as
well. It turns out that one
of the pins in the CF memory card slot was bent. Maybe I accidentally
bent it while changing the memory card one day. Anyway, I had to take
apart
the whole camera to get in there and straighten out the pin, but when I
put it all back together, it works great! No more errors. Take a look
with a flashlight and see if one of your pins are bent. And if you
decide to take it apart, be very careful about keeping track of where
each screw goes... they are tiny and they are different sizes.
If it will not read ANY type of flash media it would suggest the reader or main board is faulty.
If it reads some type but not others, look down into the card slots with a torch and check to see if any of the pins are bent over. This is a common fault most notably encountered when the machine fails to read CF type cards. You will see two rows of pins in the slot. Chances are one of the pins is bent or been pushed inwards. If you are REALLY steady with your hands you can use a very small (jewelers) screwdriver to straighten the pin. If the pin has receded, it almost impossible to fix it.
Sounds like the memory card pins are bent. Remove the card and hold the camera up to the light. Look inside the memory slot and see if you can see any bent pins or anythign that is not uniform. There are 2 rows of pins and there whould not be any missing or out of place. It can be hard to see but if there is any that look closer together or laying over thats the problem. Its common and it happens fairly easy.
Its best not to remove the card, even though people sugest using a card reader or to save battery life bent pins can trash a good camera.
can i format it with the camera as my computer has not got a card slot??
