No polarity. It's AC, not DC. The capacitor is a "non-polar" type.

SOURCE: i have a floor fan

no, the capacity is way too high.... get a capacitor of at least 1,5 uF or up to max 4 uF if you happen to have one lying around

SOURCE: will a 16uf 450v generator capacitor work in place of a 12uf 450v generator capacitor

Yes it will. The key is to not go lower in capacitance or in rated voltage. As you go up in cap size the cost will also go up so you want to stay pretty close to rated value unless dinero is no object.

Can I use a 2uF capacitor instead of a 1.8uF in a ceiling fan also would it affect performance

Should work fine. This is only 10% difference and manufacturing tolerance is typically 20% for this kind of component.

My fisher paykel ed56 dryer powers on, I can press the start button but nothing happens, it just makes a humming noise. There are no error lights flashing.

The Start/Run Capacitor has failed. The capacitor give the motor a voltage jolt to get it going. A 'humming noise is a giveaway for that issue.

Could be a shorted output rectifier (diode). This would cause a lot of current pull, and therefore voltage drop (fan slowing down). The electrolytic capacitors are for dc voltage, and will blow with wrong polarity, which means ac voltage would be the wrong polarity half the time.

Look for a capacitor. Have it tested, it may be a start capacitor for the motor, which would get it going the right way. Don't worry about polarity on the cap, but you can mark the connections if it looks important.

HOMS Evaporative Air Cooler HW:777 Slow / Not Rotating Motor, What Could Be The Problem?

capacitor for run motor has gone most likely. on the motor you will find a black box with ether 2 black wires or one black and other white with something like cbb61 ac450. that has probably gone. they in most 2 phase motors and 3 phase motors like ceiling fans. dont cost a lot to replace just make sure it is the right uf rating can be 1 uf up but not down. so say yours is 1uf and you fing a 2uf it would be fine but a 4uf will make the motor slower.

Lpine Type-X 5.25 component speakers- Crossover problem

You can use any providing you can determine the max voltage in the device and the polarity.
If the capacitor in the unit has a wire out of each end and both ends have indents then it's a non-polar type.
Speaker capacitors for tweeters tend to be around 2uf.
The Voltage of the capacitor should be bigger than any voltage in the device.
