SOURCE: loud noise while agitating in wash cycle

I have the same problem, loud plastic squeak/grind when agitating only. I'd like to fix it, but have never taken apart a washing machine.

The advice below sounds good but where do you start with "begin dissassembly from the tub down"....etc. Anyone have a good internet resource with images for disassembling this machine?

Thanks.

Please keep in mind, I am attempting to diagnose your appliance without being there and with very little information.
Your motor is bad. A Kenmore is a direct drive machine. The motor turns in one direction to wash and the other to pump and spin. The pump turns any time the motor turns. The reason it does not pump the water out while washing is because the pump is running backwards. But when it goes onto rinse or spin, the motor turns the other direction. This is the direction that's bad.
Please rate solution

Testimonial: "Thanks for your input. I took out the pump and it seems to be fine. What is the test for the water pump? Also, what is the cost of a new motor? thanks"

SOURCE: Roper washer RAX4232PQO doesn't agitate or spin

It sounds like you may have a broken motor coupling. This is a common problem that usually occurs through normal wear and tear. Replacement couplers are more resilient and resist breaking much better. If the washer will fill, will not agitate or spin, but will still drain, these are the symptoms of a broken motor coupling. The accompanying noise of the motor engaging and a rattling/grinding sound is also a common symptom. This is a very simple and inexpensive repair. The following link explains step-by-step how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

The part number is included in the link I provided. You can purchase a replacement on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11.

If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: Roper is manufactured by Whirlpool and uses Whirlpool parts, so these instructions will apply.

ROPER WASHER PULLEY SYSTEM WON'T SPIN OR DRAIN

There are a few potential causes for your Roper washer not spinning or draining:
  1. Drive belt: If the drive belt is broken or slipping, it could prevent the tub from spinning. Check the belt for any signs of damage or wear, and make sure it is properly tensioned.
  2. Lid switch: Even though you said the lid switch is ok, it's still worth checking it again as it is responsible for ensuring that the washer will not spin or drain unless the lid is closed.
  3. Motor coupler: The motor coupler connects the motor to the transmission and can wear out over time. If it has failed, the washer won't spin or agitate. Check the coupler for any signs of wear or damage.
  4. Drain pump: A clogged drain pump or pump motor failure can prevent the washer from draining. Check the pump and clean out any debris that may be blocking it.
  5. Control board: The control board could also be a potential culprit, especially if the washer is not completing cycles correctly. Check the board for any signs of damage or malfunction.
  6. Transmission: If none of the above solutions work, there may be an issue with the transmission. This will require a professional repair.
I hope this helps you diagnose and fix the issue with your Roper washer.

Roper top load RTW4640YQ1 will not drain. It makes a grinding noise but no drain. Lowered drain hose and water runs out draining tub. So, no pumping water out, but no blockage.?

could very possibly be a pin , coin , bra wire etc caught in the impeller blades preventing the pump from working
remove the pump and undo the housing of the impeller and check for obstruction

Hotpoint washer won't spin or agitate

Jump the lid switch and see if it works, then you'll know it's the lid switch

My Roper Washer RTW43405Q0 won't spin.

For the washer to operate the lid must be fully closed, the timer must be pulled out, and the water must be drained.
The main causes for not spinning are:
  • Lid partially or completely open
  • Lid or other object has hit the timer knob and turned the washer off
  • Lid not locked (by the way, not on all washers) and may be not draining.

Make sure the lid is completely closed. Make sure that no clothing is in the lid area.

Make sure the Timer knob is pulled out.
The lid must be closed and locked for the washer to operate. Once the lid is closed, make sure the desired cycle is still selected and then press the Start button and listen for the lid to lock.
Make sure there are no loose metal objects such as coins and paper clips in the lid opening area. Metal objects can prevent magnetic switches from reacting correctly when the lid is closed.

If the washer has not drained, it will not go into spin.
    Hope this works.....

Won't spin, makes clunking noise, drains fine

If it agitates fine , with normal noise , drains with lid closed , then the problem is probably the transmission .
