An ovelock machine produces a stitch that covers the raw edge of the seam while cutting excess fabric off. Look at the seams of just about any ready-to-wear garment and you'll see how there is a stitch covering the edge of the seam. That's an ovelock stitch. It keeps fabric from fraying.

I am trying to teach myself to sew.... what is a serge stitch an how do I set my brother sewing machine to do it?

A serger (overlocker) is not a sewing machine. If you look at the inside seams of a purchased t-shirt, you will usually find a serge stitch that was created using a serger (overlocker). A serger/overlocker usually uses 3 or 4 threads to create that stitch. It also trims the fabric at the same time it finishes the fabric edge. The serge stitch is a chain stitch that, if you pull a particular thread, the entire stitch will come undone.

Your sewing machine is not able to create that same stitch. Your sewing machine may have what is called an "overlock" stitch, but it will use only 2 threads (the top and bobbin) to create that stitch. You would have to consult your owner's manual to see if it can make an overlock stitch.

Problem with an overlocker that does not overlock

You may need to rethread all the threads because most sergers need to be threaded in the right sequence. I looks like this one has to be threaded starting at the right and progressing left.

I am interested in buying a Janome 525 but want to know if it has a built in overlocker

A sewing machine and an overlocker are two completly different things, but a sewing machine is usually able to do a cover stitch. An overlocker will cut the fabric at the same time, a sewing machine cannot do this.

I do not know how to rethread my Janome overlocker

look on you tube as there is a guide video. Once you have it threaded, tie the new thread to the old one and pull it through so you don't have to start again. You can even sew slowly and ease the know through the guides.
overlockers are fussy about start position of tail of thread, so hold it correctly when you start

Trying to find out what kind of machine I have purchased at sale

Serging is sewing but it only sews seams by "overlocking" the edges. This machine will not make buttonholes, darn or other sewing. Serging is great for knits and finishing seams. You got a great deal! Sell it if you don't think this is what you want. Many sewers have a traditional sewing machine and a serger. I have two of each.. plus an embroidery machine.. but then I am an addict.
