There are several ways to get photos off of the camera. Canon should provide some software here http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/digital_cameras/powershot_sd_series/powershot_sd600#DriversAndSoftware
It's quite possible that your computer will recognize the camera and offer to transfer the pictures even if you don't install more software. If not, the camera will probably show up like an external hard drive, and you can navigate through the folders and copy the files yourself.
Many computers also have a SecureDigital card slot, so you can remove the SD card from the camera and put it into the computer. This will probably be faster than plugging the camera with the USB cable.
There are many reasons both software and hardware related why this problem could be happening but I have a cheap solution for you to be able to download your pictures.
Please go to a electronics store and buy a USB card reader. I bought one last week and it cost $0.5 so its cheap as dirt. Then simply remove the card from your camera , pop it into the reader and the pictures will appear on a drive like a flashdrive in your my computer folder.
This is a much better option than using the camera's cable as it is faster , safer , saves on your camera battery and you don't need to install any software or drivers.
Connect the Camera to PC using the supplied USB cable, for windows XP and later versions the pc will identify the camera device and pop-up a window asking for "what to do next?" Select copy pictures from camera from the displayed list.
I am having the similar problem with my cannon sd600 camera. I have the pictures in my card but not able to upload to the computer. I used the memory card reader to upload the pictures and when I plug that to the computer the camera will be shutting down the power and system not able to see the pictures to upload. Please some one help me. thanks!
