GE microwave interior light bulb replacement.

I have a GE model SCA1000HBB. The interior light is not working. Is there something that shows where the bulb is and how to get to it?

please describe exactly what the part number and description of the bulb or light or lamp and where it's located on the unit. When I open the door, the interior light no longer works. I have the unit apart somewhat and believe I have the part but not sure.

Thanks

I have to have this bulb replaced once a year. It is currently burned out and I am not much for repairing these things myself. It costs me $65 to have the repairman come and do it, and I am currently needing it replaced. The replacing of the light bulb has cost me more than the microwave. Isn't this unusual to have them burn out like this? I've never had to replace a bulb in any other unit!

  • Mister O1 Dec 01, 2008

I agree, my microwave bulb burn every 3-6 months and replacement bulbs are expensive. GE should have designed the microwave with a better light bulb...

It's pretty simple as long as you have an offset phillips screwdriver...

Of course, be sure to disconnect power to microwave and be sure not to touch the new halogen bulb with fingers.

STEP-BY-STEP:
First, remove upper vent panel and remove inner filter (same directions for just replacing inner carbon filter):

Then, remove inner plastic grille (2 screws) and final screw on left side of meGE microwave interior light bulb replacement. - 6229660.jpgct" - here's whGE microwave interior light bulb replacement. - 7165bd6.jpgneed the offsetGE microwave interior light bulb replacement. - d09f0af.jpgver (and a little patience!):

Then, you can gently lift the sheet metal panel, find the light housing, squeeze and remove/replace :)

That's it...just replace bulb and reverse for reassembly. Be sure to keep track of screw locations there are various sizes/lengths used.

Instead of using an offset screwdriver a regular one will work fine. Open the top cabinet door for a better angle, bend the plastic a little and you should have a clear shot at it. The bulb is nothing special its a g8 base 120v 20w bulb, $4.97 at home depot. GE should have used an appliance rated bulb that is vibration resistant!!!!

Manufacturers used to include access panels in the rear or side so you could easily change the bulb. That exposed the customer to 110V connectors, and that posed a real liability threat, so they stopped using them.

You now must generally remove the outer cover to replace the bulb.

In many over-the-range models, that can mean having to take the oven down from the wall! For safety's sake, that should be a two-person job and it's really helpful if you have your original installation instructions to do this.

You can find them here: http://www.geappliances.com/service_and_support/literature/

Many models use one halogen lamp to illuminate the cooktop and another to illuminate the cavity. You must not touch them with your bare skin as the oils will shorten the bulb life.
You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

That should tell you where the lamps are located.

Dlarmstr's excellent post. I followed the instructions and had the bulb replaced in 10 minutes. FYI -- I used the bulb for the overhead since I'm waiting on the replacement buld from HomeDepot/GE. I'll look locally for another for future outages
Thanks again

The Advantium SCA... has a different front than the SCB... SO, while these are excellent instructions for the SCA with the removable vent at top, the SCB with an electronic panel at the top may have different procedures for accessing the bulb

I have the SCA2000BCC03 advantium. It is almost impossible to replace the interior light. After removing from wall remove the case and the control panel disconnecting all of the wires. Gentley pull cavity out giving you enough room to get an offset philips screwdriver on the single screw retaining the lamp. Its a bear but its possible to do and probably saves you $150 service charge. GE must have assembled the bulb unit before placing it into the unit. There is no simple way to replace the bulb. Maybe new units have easier access. My is 12 years old.

Thanks dlarmstr. Excellent post. The offset screwdriver was an excellent suggestion. It only cost $2 at home depot - well worth it.

SOURCE: GE microwave interior light bulb replacement.

Your post has two distinct model numbers shown, so it's hard to be precise, but I'll try my best.

I have a diagram at my site which helps you find & replace many GE cooktop and cavity light bulbs. Other models are similar. It's at
http://207.234.249.73/mwd/ge_lamp_replacement.jpg

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs!

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there.

There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), too.

If not, chances are you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.
