Unless you are using flash, night time photos require either a very long exposure, a wide aperture, or a higher ISO rating. If these are not possible with your camera, you will be unable to take photos. Mayhap the instruction manual will give you assistance here.
There's not enough detail to help solve your issue. Can you please post the brand name and model number of the camera?
SOURCE: EVEN WITH A FLASH THE PICTURES ARE DARK
I had the exact same problem and decided that rather than throw it away which would be second.... I took the back off to see if there was anything i could do.
What happened was my cats knocked it over one day and you will see inside there is a battery that is right below the circuits for the two buttoms that control flash and picture. I gave it a little push tighter up to the circuits (they weren't making proper contact) and then after a successful trial shot, put it back together and it is working perfectly. It's amazing to think that a forced movement inside of this device will completely set it off. And I can't even imagine how much money I saved. Knowing full well we don't often get 100% honesty when taking a device in to be fixed. :)

Does the flash work? Could be flash circuit or day/night sensor. If you have another D40/D50 camera that flash works but has other problems, swap out the sensors. If not the sensor but the flash circuit then most likely one of the large charge capacitors which has to be soldered in.I use a digital multimeter with I/O capacitor test function..these caps should be about 250mfd.
