Since there are gas fumes this is a dangerous situation and should really have a professional with the right equipment to find the leak.

SOURCE: Magic Chef Gas Range

Does this oven glows before igniting the gas in the oven? if it does this unit uses a glow bar ignitor in the oven and spark module for the top burners. If it you dont see the spark( or hear the ticking sound the there will be no ignition. Do you smell gas even if there was no ignition happening? If there's gas that eliminate your gas regulator. If it's only one burner with spark but gas won't come on then your gas valve is deffective. But if there's gas and no spark ten it could be poor grounding, wiring, connection or switch or even spark module problem. You to need call your local Appliance service provider on this one. I do not recommend anyone fixing gas related problem if they are not a qualified servicer.

SOURCE: stove smoke and fumes

Bebbie,

You didn't say exactly what it smells like but I assume it is not the smell of gas. This sounds like spillage of food into an area of the stove and the subsequent heating of it. Depending on which burner (or the oven) is involved, you're going to have to chase this down and clean it. Since there is minimal chance that this is electrical in nature, your other concern is a partially plugged burner caused by the mess.

Some notes: Be sure that any flame you do see has a predominantly blue appearance. If it is predominantly yellow, there is dirt which is restricting the air supply. This can cause carbon monoxide which is deadly.

Cleaning the stove top.

Have you tried oven cleaner? Use the fumless type, otherwise yo will be overcome by the fumes. Clean the grill just like you would an outdoor BBQ, wire brush, the coat it with a light oil to prevent rusting.

Where can I find the make and model number of my Kenmore gas stove?

Usually down where you pull the drawer out below the oven door on a small business card size panel. If not check the back and on older stoves they can be under the top if the top raises up easily for cleaning.

OVEN PILOT WENT OUT

hopefully the gas smell isn't too strong and posing a hazard to you. If it is, reach behind the range and turn the valve until it is across the gas line and not parallel to it. You should be able to raise the top of the range from the front and see all the workings underneath. There you will find the pilot light.

Grill

The ignition light is a spark jumping, I assume, If so, try lighting with a match or something (be careful of the sparker) if it lights you may need to adjust the angle of the module so it catches the gas better.
