Pfaff sewing machines are difficult to repair in most cases but you can try if you like. The arm that goes up and down when you push on the foot is adjusted to a spring that rises and falls. It is adjustable by a screw that holds the spring and the arm together. By loosening the screw the arm is movable up or down as necessary.

SOURCE: How to stipple with Pfaff 7550

Make sure you have the presser lifter lever in the proper position. When lowering it, push to the rear and it will stop half way down. This engages the upper tension but keeps the foot from lowering down and touching the fabric.
If this doesn't help please post the exact problem, i.e. thread pulling to the bottom etc.
Good luck!

SOURCE: Adjusting tension when stippling

Yes you should lower the feed dogs for free motion sewing. The tension can be set higher as required. A perfectly tuned up machine uses a setting of 5 but don't be afraid to go higher to get rid of the looping on the bottom.
Also, oil your hook every 8hrs with Pfaff hook oil (which is lighter weight than regular sewing machine oil) if you have it, otherwise use white sewing machine oil. Looping on the bottom can be caused by a dry hook.
good luck!

SOURCE: Pfaff creative half-speed and thread breaks

YIKES - what a nightmare! We can approach your problem two ways, but to determine whether the problem is your machine or your design, I need to know if you have been using one design, or if you've tried to embroidery several different designs and are getting threadbreaks about every 10,000 stitches, no matter what design, needle, thread, and bobbin you use.

Here are some rules you should following whenever you embroider on your machine:

  • Change your needle and insert a newly wound bobbin every time you start a new project
  • Use a size Embroidery Needle - size 90 for most projects
  • Check the backside of your design - you should see alot more bobbin thread than embroidery thread. If you don't see enough bobbin thread, loosen your top tension. If the tension is set automatically, change it manually.
  • Your design might be the problem. Some designs have WAY to many stitches. If you haven't already, choose several different designs with different styles - for example, a monogram, a design that is mostly satin stitches, a design that is mostly straight stitches, and so on. Sew one or all over and over so you determine whether your thread will continue to break about every 10,000 stitches.
I hope this helps. Machine embroidery is so much fun once you've learned and practiced. I hope to hear from you - machine embroidery is not hard to learn, but there is a lot to learn. Thanks.

If you want to get right to work, skip the troubleshooting and answer as many questions as you can or have time for. It is possible that your problem is the design and not the machine. Try one suggestion at time so you what helps and what doesn't. Questions first:

  1. Is the machine brand new, or new to you?
  2. Do you have your manual?
  3. Do you been embroidering by machine for a while, or are you just learning?
  4. Does this problem occur with every design you sew, or is it one particular design that you are having trouble with?
  5. How many total stitches are in the design you are trying ot sew?
  6. What kind of thread are you using (rayon, poly, sewing?)
  7. Did you buy the machine from a dealer, and if so, does it have a warranty?
  8. Have you taken lessons on how to use your machine for both sewing and embroidery?
  9. Are you familiar with embroidery backings, needles, and threads and how to choose which to use for a particular project?

Can't adjust tension on pfaff 1475 cd. thread all bunched up underneath. have rethreaded it and adjusted tension.

Hi, Your problem is the UPPER tension. The thread may not be getting between the tension discs. Try this: Make sure the presser foot is up and thread the machine stopping short of the eye of the needle. Pull on the thread and it should move easily, Now drop the presser foot and you should feel tension on the thread. Adjust the tension up and down and you should feel a difference.
If there is no change then there is something keeping the tension discs open.

I have a Pfaff hobbymatic 919-1. It seems to sew alright but the presser foot does not go down very strong and often I have to push it down....what could be wrong?

many presser foot shafts have a adjuster knob around the top that increases the spring tension that pushes the foot down
check around the top and turn that ring

How to shir fabric with elastic thread on Piaf 1475 sewing machine

Not sure if this works on all machines, but I have used this method on many different models. You should not have to adjust the tension on the bobbin or the top thread. Wind the elastic on the bobbin by hand, not stretched as you wind it. Just normal, then try a test piece. The only thing that you should adjust is the stitch length if needed. The bobbin tension is a very tricky thing to meddle with. Hope this helps.

My pfaff 1475 CD thread is loopy on bottom and breaks on top.

Look very closely at your sample stitching and determine which thread (top or bobbin) is looping and which is breaking. That will narrow down where the problem exists.

A top thread that loops and makes thread "barfs" under the fabric is generally an upper thread tension problem.
Try: Remove the top thread. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Set the upper tension to the midway point (probably will need to tweak this tension depending on your machine).

This is common on this machine. The grease used in the factory is now hardened. The fix is usually to take it in for service. Not a quick fix at home. Sorry, :(
