It really depends on the model as to how easy it is to get to the recoil starter mechanism

SOURCE: It's discontinued. How can I find parts to replace? I need a shaft attacher. Isn't this model the same as another ? anyone?

I found a Toro 51950 in garage sale for $5.00
I got it thinking I could give it to my son-in-law and daughter, who just moved from an apartment to a home. What's 5 bucks for a trimmer?
But It was missing the grass shield and the air filter cover.
I spent 3 days searching and found a web site called SuperXPower.com
I clicked under HOMELITE PARTS and then under TORO HAND HELD then clicked MODEL 51950.
I ordered the parts last night, but never got an email confirmation, I called their 800 number (M-F 8-5 CST) and the parts man said they got my order and they will contact HOMELITE and get the parts from them and then ship them on to me. Their phone number was 866-983-3799.
I don't know if HOMELITE has the parts or if I will actually get the parts - but this gives me hope I will be able to fix up this trimmer.
Hope this helps.

Gas leak at grommet on gas tank where gas lines enter and leave tank

Yes you should be able to replace the rubber tank seal that the fuel line goes through. Be sure to replace the fuel line(s) when you do.

Pulley cord wont go down unable to start on gas trimmer

Your cord wont recoil?

You should remove the recoil cover and see if you can rewind the rope manually.

It isnt too hard and will let you know immediately if you need to replace the recoil.

Just the recoil unit by loosening the three or four bolts and lift it off the trimmer. Turn it over and look at the recoil spool. There should be a notch in it. This is were you catch a bit of the starter rope and start turning it in the direction of normal rotation. Normal rotation will put tension on the recoil spring.
When you put 4-6 turns into it just let it recoil and see if it pulls all the rope back in. That's it. If the cord didnt recoil something inside the recoil has broken and you need to get the unit serviced or replaced. Most of the time the cost of repairing something like this is prohibitive. Its a better idea to just replace the whole unit.

Good luck and be careful!

Pull start on my Toro snowthrower (snow master 20 - model #38020) it wont recoil itself. I removed the starter housing but can not figure out how to get the pulley and starter recoil spring out/off of the...

Its basically the same....best bet is to just buy the new pull start mechanism...they are pretty cheap, and they go bad on those units all the time.

What causes a 2 stroke engine to have too much compression and therefore difficult to pull the recoil starter?

Nothing will do this...what is most likely the problem is either the recoil is going bad or you have the wrong spark plug installed.
