Why do some of the old CRT TVs have gray screens when turned off, rather than black?

I'd guess it has something to do with the contrast and viewability but I haven't seen anything online when researching this question. I have a CRT right now from 1985 with a light gray screen when it is off and I'm curious as to why this was sometimes used rather than a full black screen.

The manufactures at that time determined the base color manufactured. The best TVs were coated black...to improve contrast. Usually Sony and Zenith. They were advertised as having the black matrix tube. These sets also ran very hot for that reason. GE and others used green...these sets ran cooler and had good color success. RCA found success using red....Sony occasionally used red as well. Green was the dominate base for most TVs. The gray you described is probably the black matrix tube, and your brightness may be set brighter, do its age. Thanks for asking, Matt of Martins TV.

SOURCE: Screen is half Black

The ribbon cable that controls the screen is damaged (or the liquid crystal has baked out... tis happens when the unit is exposed to high temps or long periods of direct sunlight). From my experience w/ these calculators they cannot be repaired.

SOURCE: DLP TV: Left half normal, vertical 6" band center is gray, right half almost black. What's wrong?

No. The optical engine is OK. You need an adjustment in the light tunel. Call a tech to do it.

SOURCE: L13V36 Dark Screen, picture can be seen in bright light.

If the backlight lights up for a second it's probably fine - It lay odds on the display inverter in the screen. Actually finding parts for anything made by gateway may be difficult, however. They do not sell spare parts. Considering the size of the LCD i bet it would almost exceed the replacement cost of the screen to repair it

SOURCE: 1/2 the screen is viewable

You would be wrong. Lamps do not do that. They either work or they don't, they do not cast shadows or give half an image.

What is going on is the light tunnel has failed. It is a small, 4-sided mirrored tunnel that focuses the light into the optical chamber. It is directly behind the color wheel. I've seen this probelm dozens of times.

I am trying to adjust the brightness on this circa 1980 floor model solid state tv

The contrast setting controls the relation between the light and black areas of the screen. If the light areas are too bright and are losing details, press the CVOL button; if the picture is gray and lacks contrast, press the VOLB button

The brightness setting controls the overall amount of light in the picture. If the picture is too bright, press the CVOL button; if the picture is too dark, press the VOL B button

The color setting controls the intensity of color.

Projector tv color is all wrong I need help

That can either be the Guns are out of adjustment or the CRT coolant needs replacement. You can verify if the guns are balanced properly by simply turning the color level down to zero. The picture should appear all gray like the old black and white Tvs. Any color tint would indicate the guns need to be balanced properly. If they wont balance out then its usually because CRT coolant has failed and that can be verified by looking into the lens of each CRt as its playing you will see bad crt coolant instantly if its present because the image will not be clear and you will see bacterial growth inside the lens if its bad Coolant.

Ghosting

I know exactly what your talking about. I've seen in many times. It' happens too in CRT monitors as well as LCD. It could ALTHOUGH be as simple as a bad cable catching interference. Most likely though, it sounds like a bad LCD driver board or video board. If you have warranty, call it in. Otherwise see if it lessens with adjustments of contrast and brightness up and down. This directly affect the driver board power and can improve it enough to be tolerable again.

WEGA 36" : Screen is low contrast and green

Sorry to say, it sounds like a bad picture tube, But could be also the capacitor that filters the screen voltage on the crt drivers. In all my years though, your complaint has been the picture tube. Good Luck.
