If you are more than just a beginner you can attach that drive to your PC and run a drive copy program that will create an exact image of your current drive. Once that is created then you can add the new drive to the computer make sure your system recognizes it and can boot from it. I have done this many times.
My step father actually copied the original drive to the ssd, but there is a boot up error saying that the computer shut itself down to prevent damage. It gives me the option of it running system recovery to try and fix it, then it goes back to shutting itself down, or starting it normally, which shuts it down as well.

If you can get your hands on a Windows XP cd, it will partition and format the drive for you allowing you to install from scratch. You would then just plug in the license key from the sticker on your laptop. As far as the recovery disk on the original CD, there might be an option on bootup that would have you push an F key to access it. Or you can usually order them online. It's not too hard to get the drivers you need from online so I would just go with any XP disk you can get your hands on. You'll be using your own license so you can even borrow one.

if you have a windows xp disc when you start to install it it will have to format it first by default unless you ask the cd to repair windows in which case it just over writes the files and registry
