The top tension has to be set to a tension (usually four) to do the job. Try to thread your machine with the foot up and this will make it easier to go through the tension control so that when you turn it on it will be in the center of the control where it should be. Anyway, if the top tension is too low there will be bunching of thread on the bottom. If the bunching continues you may need to loosen the bobbin tension.

SOURCE: sudden knotting under fabric

I have an Elna 2005 machine and had a similar but opposite problem whereby the tension up top was too tight - thread wouldn't pull smoothly. I found adjusting the feed dog lever slightly helped the stitches a lot, even though the needle tension up top is no better. Hope that helps! :-s

I had this problem and it all came down to using the wrong backing. I kep trying to use tearaway on everything but WRONG. Using the proper backing corrects most problems. Good Luck!

SOURCE: the thread keeps bunching up under the fabric while sewing

Try taking out your bobbin and upper thread and rethread and check tension. Thread may be caught down below or lint.

SOURCE: Thread is bunching underneath fabric

Needle in correct? Be sure your bobbin is not in upside down and turning the wrong way. Possibly the hook that the bobbicase fits in/on has been hit by a needle and caused a burr that is catching the thread as it comes around. The burr would have to be polished off or hook replaced. The machine could be slightly out of time also.

SOURCE: need online manual

If you are having problems with the thread on the underside of the fabric, that is usually the upper tension. Check to make sure that it is threaded correctly. If so, make sure that the thread is inside the tension disc and that there are no pieces of thread caught in the tension. If it is threaded and there are no thread caught up in the tension assembly, adjust your tension dial to a slightly higher number. Do this until you get a good stitch.

Have lots of thread on the under side of fabric

Thread nesting or bird nesting resulting usually from: mis-threading, upper thread not seated completely in the tension disk, upper thread tension too loose. HINT: ALWAYS raise the presser foot when threading the upper thread.

The tension on my machine is off.I don't know which thread to adjust.bobbin or top thread. on fabric top stitch seems ok,bottom stitch bunches up and is loose. How do I readjust the tensions?

If the thread problem appears under the fabric, it is a top thread issue.

If the thread problem appears on the top of the fabric, the bobbin thread is the issue.

Perhaps the upper thread is not seated completely in the tension disk. Remove the upper thread from the machine, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot, then rethread from the beginning. Make sure the thread path is correct. Test your stitch.

If the thread is still looping under the fabric, the upper tension is too loose. Set the upper tension to the midway point. Test and adjust the tension until it is where you want it. Preferred tension is when both threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

My thread bunches up on my material

On top of the fabric? The problem is either the upper tension is too tight and/or the bobbin tension is too loose.

Under the fabric (thread nesting)? The upper tension could be too loose and/or the bobbin tension is too tight. Also could mean the upper thread is not seated properly in the upper tension disk or it is threaded incorrectly. Remove the thread. RAISE the presser foot. Then rethread from the beginning--verify the thread pathway is correct.

Why is my Brother SQ9185 Sewing Machine thread bunching up on the back side of the fabric?

That is called thread nesting or bird nesting. Usually it is because it is threaded incorrectly (sometimes the thread jumps out of a thread guide or the take-up lever), the upper thread is not seated in the tension disk, or the upper tension is incorrect.

First thing, install a brand new needle.
Second, remove the upper thread, RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning--make sure the correct thread path is followed.
Third, check that the upper tension is set at the midway point between high & low number.

Test. Adjust the upper tension as needed. Re-test. Tension is correct when the upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

My thread bunches under me material and can' t sew

Sounds like "thread nesting" also called "bird nesting." Usually, it is a result of incorrect threading, incorrect tension, or the thread not being properly seated in the tension disk.

Remove the thread.
Install a brand new needle.
RAISE the presser foot and rethread the machine from the beginning making sure the thread path is correct.
Set the upper tension to the midway point between low & high numbers.
Test.
The correct tension is achieved when the upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric. If upper thread is looping under the fabric, the upper tension is too loose. If the bobbin thread is appearing on the top of the fabric, the upper tension is too tight. If it is difficult to determine what is happening with tension, try using a different color thread (but ALWAYS the same type & weight) in the bobbin as what is used as upper thread.

Tension is static--it needs to be adjusted whenever a new project is begun because the needle/thread/fabric combination will affect the tension. A sewist should become comfortable with adjusting the upper tension on a piece of the scrap fabric before actually beginning to sew the project.

My machine bunches tread on the bottom of the fabric when sewing. What am I doing wrong. This machine is new to me.

thread bunching under material is an indication that the needle thread is not at the correct tension
tighten up the tension setting until the result is where the both treads meet at the center of the materials being sewn
practice on pieces of scrap until you get it right

Regular sewing - I cannot get the thread tension correct. The bobbin seems too lose. How do I adjust? I've tried using the adjust key but I still get loose thread and puckered fabric.

Be sure to RAISE the presser foot BEFORE threading the upper thread. Set the upper tension to the mid-point which is generally the factory setting. Test. If thread is looping or bunching under the fabric, the upper tension needs to be tightened. If there is a problem above the fabric, try loosening the upper tension.

NOTE--sometimes the stitching problem is a result of the type of fabric being sewn. Most machines have a presser foot pressure setting that can be tightened or loosened to accommodate the fabric.

The tension is correct when the two threads meet in the middle of your fabric.

When i run a straight stitch, the top of the fabric looks well sewn; the thread on the bottom of the fabric, however, bunches up-it looks nothing like the top stitch.

Is it really the bobbin thread that is bunching under the fabric, or is it really the top thread that is creating loops and "bird nests" under the fabric???

Rethread your upper thread. BEFORE you thread the upper thread, be sure to RAISE the presser foot. This releases the upper thread tension disks so the thread is firmly seated in the tension disk.

If it continues to be a problem, then the upper tension needs to be tightened. Adjust slightly, then test. Repeat until the upper and lower threads meet in the middle of the fabric.
