Could be a lost boot sector. Download Testdisk and use it to recreate the boot sector.

SOURCE: seagate external hard drive problem

I have the same problem with a 500GB HD by the same maker. Fortunately mine started throwing "delayed write failed" errors regarding the MFT. I had enough time to save my data. Your event log should say something to point you in the right direction. Make sure your pc is up to date with the latest service pack too and start looking for a new External HD. Tiger Direct has great deals. I got a 1TB for about $120 Good Luck!

SOURCE: Knocked over Seagate 500GB FA Pro Makes Beep Noise/Can't Connect

it sounds like the disc (inside the hard drive casing) has become jammed or what is known as "stickation". the best way to unstick the disc is usually another sharp blow. the best way to do this is to remove the drive from the external casing and, while holding it by one side, strike the other side downward onto a hard surface like a wood desk. do not strike it on metal or cement as you may cause more damage. make sure the surface is softer than the drive casing. it sounds extreme but it has worked for me on several occasions.

SOURCE: my seagate external hard drive is making a beeping

Hello there quaylanburns.

Here's your geek-steer ...

Please refer to another post of mine I JUST submitted. Just like him, I'm going to recommend you also perform a chkdsk on the problem drive ...

chkdsk DRIVE_LETTER: /X /R

Regardless of the outcome of that diagnostic, if you're having ANY persistent hard-disk-drive (HDD) access difficulties, AND you have irreplaceable data contained on that HDD, your IMMEDIATE objective is to BACKUP/RECOVER that data.

Please refer to another post of mine for follow on guidance.

Good luck, and please do post back ...

  • to let me (and interested others) know how things worked out,
  • to provide clarification or feedback,
  • if you have ANY further questions.
Today's the best day of my life ... and NOW you're part of it!

SOURCE: I have dropped a Seagate

hello vyseman15,
hard disc drives need to be handled carefully, they can only handle a limited rough usage. especially dropping while it is working is very dangerous, in most cases the head will "scratch" (damage) the discs surface which make the device afterwards useless.
sorry to say there is nearly no chance to make it work again. there are some companies who can rescue some of the data on it, but they are expensive anyway.
regards

Bought a seagate backup plus hard drive to backup files, installed on computer but cannot backup files, problem says could not be performed because of anI/O device error.

Connect the external drive to a different computer, and try to copy a few files to it. If you still get "I/O Error", then the unit has malfunctioned.

Seagate backup plus is beeping and will not pull up on computer??

Troubleshooter: Seagate Manager does not see my Seagate FreeAgent drive Troubleshooting in case the Seagate Manager cannot detect the FreeAgent drive.
Sometimes, Seagate Manager (the software bundled with newer FreeAgent drives) does not see the drive.
This article focuses on drives that can be seen in Windows, but are not seen in the software.
If you are using Windows 8, please note that Seagate Manager is not supported in Windows 8, so you will need to use a different backup solution.

If the drive is not detected in Windows 7/Vista/XP, then use the external drive troubleshooters to try to resolve the non-detection issue.
After connecting the FreeAgent drive, please give it up to 1 minute to display in the middle of the main screen in Seagate Manager.
208575-1.jpg
If the drive does not display, open My Computer (Computer for Vista) and confirm the drive is listed there. The drive should be listed as "FreeAgent Drive". If you have formatted or renamed the drive, then it will show up with the name you provided.
If the drive does not display in My Computer (Computer for Vista), use the External Drive Troubleshooter to help resolve that issue before continuing.
If the drive is detected in Windows, check if the Seagate service is running.
  1. Right-click on the My Computer (Computer for Vista) icon.
  2. Choose Manage.
  3. In the Computer Management window, click Services and Applications.
  4. Open the Services area.

    208575-2.jpg
  5. Scroll down the Seagate Service (they are listed alphabetically).
  6. The Seagate service should display Started in the Status column.
If it does not, right-click on the service and choose START.
  7. If the service reports as Disabled, enable it to start automatically.
To do this, right-click on the service. A Status Type drop-down menu will appear. Click on the General tab. Select Automatic and click OK.
    208575-3.jpg
  8. Reboot the computer.
  9. If the service fails to start after you reboot with these settings, then check the logs of your Antivirus or Antispyware software to confirm they are not restricting the startup of this service, as some aggressive protection programs can prevent services from starting until you approve them. So, you may need to approve this program specifically in the Antivirus/Antispyware software. Please contact your anti-virus software support for help.
  10. If the service will not start or is working already, uninstall the software (for steps on uninstalling the software, see this article).
  11. Once the software is uninstalled, reboot the computer.
  12. Then reinstall the software by opening the InstallSeagateManager.EXE file on the FreeAgent drive. If you have removed the software from the drive, it can be downloaded from the download center.
  13. If the drive is still not seen by the computer, connect the drive to other USB ports on the computer.
Some eSATA cards block the drive's identity and prevent it from working. Updates have been made to Seagate Manager and to some vendors' eSATA drivers to help this issue. See our eSATA tips article for details.
  14. If the drive still does not display after these steps, please contact Technical Support.

Backup Plus Potable 500 GB Light Blinking and disk not being read I've got a Seagate 500 GB backup plus external hard disk which is about 2 months old. The hard disk has started to make a slight clicking...

The clicking could be a symptom of imminent failure of the hard drive . Back up all information from this drive as soon as possible. It may be something that a program such as checkdisk can fix but be sure to backup drive before attempting any fixes just to be safe. Hope this helps.

Try Testdisk to see if there are any issues with the drive and if necessary repair or create a new boot sector.

Lost Data-Please Help

Make sure you have both USB connectors of the Seagate Y cable plugged into the computer (yes - two USB ports are used up)
It's possible that the drive is not fully powered and stuff on it doesnt show up. You need to use two from your computer to give the drive enough juice.

Power indication light flashing

Hi, you may want to try connecting it by USB if you're currently using firewire or the other way around and see if it works. If this fails, you are probably better off using diagnostics by Seagate @ http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=7f4e19e0babfd010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD&locale=en-US#. Try to use the Troubleshooting or FAQ or if you feel comfortable using their utilities, download SeaTools. Hope this be of help to you. Good luck.
