SOURCE: whats region 1 dvd?
dvds are coded differently depending on which region of the world they are intended for. there are eight regions - check this link for more info; http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=502554 this was a pointless idea that was supposed to limit video piracy, but only actually causes problems and increased production costs The US is in region 1, so the problem is the settings on your dvd/vcr as to what region it is coding the discs as. You may be able to change this in one of the menus, but it may be designed for only one region code output. Check the manual - if you need a manual or have trouble then please post the make and model of your dvd vcr recorder and we can try to help Hope this helps you :)
SOURCE: DYNEX DX - PD510 Portable DVD Player
I contacted Dynex via their website, I received a reply the next day will all sorts of "standard" things to do, clean the disk, make sure it is a disk for region 1, turn it on with the power supply plugged in, it may be moisture, leav it on for an hour with no disk etc. I had already tried all of these things including a 24 hour turn off, no joy, they didnt listen to the symptoms I had sent them. WHen I replied to them they said I needed to call their support line in the United States and they would assis me, I replied by email that a call from Aus to US would cost more than the unit if I had to wait in a queue and asked if we could please solve the problem by email, I have not had a reply and it is 5 days later. They acted like no one else has had the problem which of course is garbage, If I dont hear from them I will contact our Consumer Affairs people and make a complaint, they are still selling the DVD players in Australia, annoying isnt it?

lachallep,
The solution for your problem will be needing a little knowledge with electronic repair and hands on.Most common problem for portable DVD player is their 1) Spindle motor the 2) flex cable ( tin ribbon wire connecting the optic lens and the main board)
note: to check if your spindle motor is working good, you must measure it's resistance and it should be around 200ohms.
For the flexcable all you have to do is check the continuity.
cheers.

Try cleaning the dvd compartment of all dust and debris with a can of compressed air. Check and make sure all the dust and debris is cleared of the laser transport and lens. Use cotton swabs and small amount of isopropyl alcohol to clean off the laser lens and tracks and gears of the transport . Use a cotton swab with a small amount of alcohol on the tip to clean the laser lens. Rub the swab gently across the lens, until it appear bright and shines. Use the other side of the swab to remove any excess moisture from the lens. Use cotton swabs to clean the rails and gear of transport. Applie small amounts of alcohol to the tips to loosen caked on dust or dirt. Use compressed air again to clear the dust and debris from transport area. After the through cleaning. Try the player again, using a dvd to see if the operation returns to normal. If not, try resetting the dvd player to factory setting. You can do this using the on screen menu to go into the settings. Use the remote control and press the settings button. Use the up and down arrows to highlight the preferences section and press enter. Once in the sub-menu use the up and down arrows to highlight the default function and press enter. This will have reset the dvd player to the factory settings. Now try using a dvd to test the player to see if it operates normally. If it does not play normally, you may have a proplem with the spindel, check it to make sure its is making good contact with motor, if it appears loose, applie a drop of super glue to snug up the grip. After it dries completely. Test the player again with a dvd. If the unit still fails to operate normally, you may be having problems with either the drive motor or the power supply circuits. For these problems you need to contact a service center. They will have all the service information to troubleshoot these problems properly. You can call Phillips customer support at this telephone number 1-888-744-5477. They will be able to tell you how to get the dvd player tested and serviced. I hope this information helps you with your problem.
