Your scanner’s lock switch may be locking up the carriage unit. Depending on the model you own, your scanner’s lock switch resides in one of two locations. You can find it beneath the scanner itself or in a corner next to the scanner bed after you lift the lid. The switch should be marked with a locked and unlocked padlock symbol; slide the switch to the unlocked padlock to unlock the carriage unit.
It’s also possible that the supplied USB cable is improperly connected to your computer. Connect the cable directly to your PC. Canon’s online documentation indicates that scanners that connect via a USB hub may not work properly. Once you have unlocked your scanner and properly connected it directly to your computer, try to rescan the image.

Turn off printer and unplug it from power supply.
Check ADF if it appears to be damaged ( open the top portion so that you can check the mechanisms ) unplug the ADF cable from back of scanner and replug it, replug power cable, turn it on and try scanning using adf again.

Most likely your drum unit is worn out. If it reaches the yield of 50k or more, it starts to develop grooves in the drum and toner gets stuck in the groove and is applied to your pages. If you have a service company, they can change it for you. We sell the drum for $220.
SOURCE: My Hp Officejet 7210 will not scan, fax or feed
I also was not able to copy, scan or fax multiple pages through the ADF of our HP Officejet 7210 AIO, but it would print well from our computers.
It would either grab several pages at once, or not grab paper at all. The feeder was trying but had poor traction action. Not sure if that's the same situation for you, but this is what fixed ours:
I purchased part number C7309-60091 feed roller assembly, and part number C7309-60076 separation pad from Encompass Parts, and replaced them. The ADF works great now.
Our HP Officejet 7210 had only 3,000 pages printed on it, which didn't seem like enough to wear out the separation pad or feed roller in the ADF, especially since all those pages didn't go through the ADF, so I figure it's because of our very dry environment. Hope this helps you.
