If this does not work you will be having 2 usb at the back and in the front of the system.IF the back does not work than you need to get a local tech out at your place as it is a problem with the USB controller on the motherboard and that might have to be replced .If it is the front USB (Only if you have them) then there is a cable coming from the USB controller to the fromnt usb ports that cable might have got unplugged for that you need to open the tower. But i would still recommend a local tech.

I think you might have a loose cononection for the data ports. Try putting a little bit of force on the usb device. Up, down left right. NOT ALOT. If it starts working when force is used, i tihnk you should try to take it apart and resolder the connections. If it dosen't work, uninstalling the driver and installing.

You may want to temporarily connect a PS2 mouse (and keyboard if you wish)
The PS2 connectors are round, a purple one for the keyboard and green for the mouse.
If you have the original Dell disks that came with the system, one will
be a driver disk (don't accidentally re-install windows from the other
disk).
most drivers are available at:

SOURCE: i cant get any mouse to work on my dell laptop.
