Your mower isn't getting enough fuel. I suspect that the injectors are dirty. Get a can of injector cleaner and add it to the fuel. If that doesn't do the trick then remove the air cleaner to engine rubber hose to look inside the manifold to see if there is any think caught in it.
Also look at the hose as some times they peel on the inside acting like a valve shutting the air to the engine causing black smoke and may be a knock.
You can then check the injectors start the tractor and open the injector lines one at a time open the engine should die down if this is ok then move to the next and do the same.
Check to see if you have one of the injectors not working then you may need to remove and send for servicing.

Have you replaced the fuel filter and or the air filter. I would start there with the fuel filter, you may have a small spin on or a small inline filter. if you have an in line fuel filter take it off and blow thur it, if it is clear it is ok. If you have a spin on just replace it. Take off your air filter and clean it with compressed air.

Why does 2005 Kia Sorento die while driving

If it is a diesel vehicle check the pressure of the diesel pump. It would appear that the diesel pump on this model wears out and it loses pressure. If the pressure is ok there is switch/filter on the common rail that might be blocked. Unfortunately it appears that this switch can not be cleaned but must be replaced. hope this helps.

1998 F250 diesel jut quit while driving down the road.

With a diesel I'd have to look in to the fuel system. I'd check the pump first. I know from personal experience when a fuel pump dies on a fuel injected engine there is no warning... like someone reached over a turned the key off.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom
