Sounds like the power adaptor has failed. (Possibly a broken wire at the connector).

I assume it is a USB connection? Does it also have a power adaptor or a USB dongle that has 2 USB connectors? If you cannot get it to power up, the only other option to retrieve your data is to take the HD out of the case and connect it to a PC or laptop using a SSD or SATA to USB adapter and see if you can get the PC to recognize it.

SOURCE: Maxtor Basics external portable hard drive not getting detected

I have a Western digital model wd2500b007-rnn
and I cannot get either my PC or my laptop to recognize the drive. I isolated the drive to another computer with the same error. It says USB device not reognized. I also tried a different port. I have not tried different cables. Can I retrieve the old data on the drive?

Did you find a resolution for this? I am having the same problem. None of my PCs can recognize the drive. Formatting seems to be the only choice but I need to recover my old data first.

UPGRADE DRIVER FOR MAXTOR 3100 EXT HARD DRIVE

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

I have just been given a Maxtor 750gb separate hard drive but it has no power adaptor. Would i be able to use an adaptor from my 500gb Maxtor separate hard drive or will i have to purchase a new power...

By SEPARATE I am taking that to mean an external drive and not an internal mounted drive. If IT IS external the same power supply should work fine as the drive motors are the same in both models. IF IT IS Internal then the question is whether your power supply is molex or ATA.

My maxtor external hard drive has stopped working. When I plug the power in the light only comes on temporarily therefore i can't use it. Have I lost all my saved data?

My maxtor external hard drive has stopped working. There is a chance that you can recover data using a USB to IDE or SATA Adapter Cable to recover your data they cost about $30 if you cant get hard drive to power with adapter chances are it has crashed there are places that can get data off hard drive but they are very pricey hope this helps.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 - flashing green light.

Solution:
First, disconnect the power cable from the back of the external hard drive:
If the power supply LED continues to blink:
  1. Connect the power supply to a different outlet (or instead of connecting to a power strip, connect directly to an outlet in the wall).

  2. If the power supply continues to blink after changing outlets, this indicates that the power supply is defective and needs to be replaced.

  3. If the power supply stays solid, then reconnect to the external hard drive and see if the drive spins.

One hard drive failure mode is a power circuit short. Contact MAXTOR support on their web site for a possible warranty replacement. BTW, SEAGATE owns MAXTOR now.
