The 5-thread model has an 'extra' lower looper. Probably something in the threading path is off and the only way to correct this is to pull all of the threads out and rethread them in reverse order: 5-4-3 and then the needles.

Try contacting Elna directly, or find your nearest agent thru their website, if in USA ....here

having this photo should help trace a part number if you can get onto an Elna service technician, if it were Janome, I could look up our references, so it should be straightforward.

SOURCE: REX blind hem how to lock the stitch

When I purchased my blindstitch machine, I was also told to kind of snap the fabric as you pulled it our of the machine. Like you, I found that to be a little risky. Sometimes I'd just unravel what I'd sewn. I have found the most dependable thing to do is: Before removing the fabric from the machine, snip the thread between the fingers of the looper as it approaches the needle. If the loop is broken, the chain stitch will not pull out. If you cut the loop as it approaches the needle, you will get a bit longer tail so the needle doesn't come unthreaded on the next run. If you find you need a bit longer thread tail, you can pull a bit on that loop before cutting. As long as the needle has passed through the loop on the previous stitch, you'll be fine.

SOURCE: I need an Elna Pro 5 DC serger machine Owner's Manual

The original manual is out of print and all that is available now is photocopies and they cost about $15. Let me know if you still need it and your zip code so that I would know how much postage would be.

Elna lock pro dc 5 upper looper release lever won't move to the left

If the upper looper release lever on your Elna Lock Pro DC 5 is not moving to the left, it may be jammed or stuck. Here are some steps you can try to fix the issue:
  1. Ensure that the needle bar is in the lowest position, as you have already done.
  2. Turn off the machine and unplug it from the power source.
  3. Remove the needle plate and check for any thread or debris that may be obstructing the lever.
  4. Use a small brush or vacuum to remove any debris or lint from the area.
  5. Apply a drop of oil to the lever mechanism and gently move it back and forth to see if it will release.
  6. If the lever is still stuck, try gently tapping it with a small hammer or rubber mallet to loosen any debris or rust that may be causing the issue.
If none of these steps work, it may be necessary to take your machine to a professional for repair or servicing.

What are the correct settings for basteing on an elna excellence 730

Here's a manual for your machine:

ELNA eXcellence 730 Instruction Manual

If your machine does not have a "basting" stitch selection, you make your own basting stitch by:

* Setting the stitch length to the maximum
* Loosen the upper tension so the bobbin thread lies flat under the fabric

Then to gather or remove the basting stitch, it is easy to pull on the bobbin thread.

I'm not sure how to thread my machine, I lost my manual elna lock pro 5Dc

I would suggest that you buy a new manual for this as your overlocker has 5 threads that need to be threaded up correctly to form a stitch and there are several different stitches that can be made with this model such as a rolled hem, chain stitch, three thread overlock, four thread overlock and safety stitch with three thread overlock, lots to learn.

You can buy a manual here for $USD14.99: http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/instruction-manual-elna-pro5dc.aspx
or this website has a copy for $USD10.
http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Manuals/Elna_Manuals/Pro_4DC_DE_Instruction_Manual.htm

Always well worth buying the manual and saving a lot of frustration trying to guess how things work and it adds value if you are going to sell the item.

You can get some general overlocker threading tips from http://sewing.about.com/od/sergersoverlock/ss/serger.htm which may help you too.

I nead a manual for a elna special ? please

Hi there,

try this link http://www.arizonaexpressionz.com/elna_instruction_manuals/Elna_EC_ZZ_SP_ST_SU_manual.pdf

there is a sewing guide available too, the SP would have less stitch functions than the SU - they did combined manuals for this range I think.

Good sturdy Swiss made machine, these were used in school classrooms for many years in NZ.

I need a manual for an Elna Special machine. I am not sure of how to thread the machine properly and I don't know what one of the dials on the front of the machine does.

There is also a Yahoo group for Heirloom Elna owners which this model is.
You can find threading diagrams and manuals at www.sewusa.com. the supermatic will be closest to your Special. This webpage has images of threading the bobbin; all Swiss made Elna's have this wonderful top loading bobbin system and they are great. Important: use Elna bobbins, they have holes on the TOP ONLY. When you wind the bobbin, ensure the thread winds evenly by nudging the thread with your finger tip, keep the thread under tension as it winds by placing the handle of your scissors onto the top of the thread reel. Cut the thread, then place the bobbin into the bobbin case, holes upwards. The bobbin will turn anticlockwise as you pull thread from it. Follow the directions from the threading diagram, you need to "click" the thread into the tension spring. Now thread the top thread through the marked locations in the diagram. Hold the end of the thread as it comes from the needle and manually turn the flywheel to lower the needle down and up once to catch the bottom thread and bring it up to the needle plate.

ALWAYS hold both the two threads at the back of the needle plate when you start sewing, really important. I tally_girl.jpg You will have a knob with numbers going from -4 to 4, this is your stitch length dial. The negative numbers are "Reverse" normal stitch length is 2.5. The white knob is stitch width when the needle swings from side to side. Straight stitch would be zero, and then higher numbers for zig zag etc. The little wheel gives you different needle positions. And the metal slide at top of case is the reverse lever.
Hope this helps you a little. Early Elnas are all very similar and wonderful machines to use.

Elna pro dc 5 stitch width lever

Hi Dawn,

That machine is a Hosea Serger right?

I looked at some specs but I can't find that part you have described. Is it on the front panal?

Sergers are tricky, you might want to have a someone look at it make sure it is balanced. I'm gonna look into a couple more options for you in the mean time.
