Sounds like you hve "noise" on the phone line you are using. Try plugging a normal phone into the line socket you are using for faxing, then pick up the reciever to make a call. If you hear crackling then the line is noisy and you need your phone service provider to repair the line. If you dont hear crackling try using another line lead.
I quick way to really determine if the line could be a problem is try dialing your fax from another phone ,like a cell phone and just listen. What do you hear, noise, a recording, or do you hear the squelch tone that your fax machines should be putting out. If not then the line could still be the problem. Also if you recently switched to a DSL line then you should get a DSL filter and install it inline on your fax line. Also does your fax ring like it's trying to pick-up? If so, do you have the reception mode incorrectly set to TAD or manual mode.
Greetings Nana,
I believe that you can specify how many rings should occur before your Kodak 5500 Ai Printer automatically answers an incoming call (default = 4).
If you have a dedicated fax line, set the Rings to Answer to 1 or 2.
If you have a shared line for voice/modem and fax, set the Rings to answer to 3, 4, or 5. This setting only applies if Answering Machine Mode is set to OFF.
When the Answering Machine mode is disabled, Rings to Answer applies and your AiO printer answers the call. When your AiO printer detects a fax tone, it receives the fax. When a voice call is received (no fax tone), the call is ignored.
1 Press Menu to display the main menu.
2 Press scroll down until Fax Settings is displayed.
3 Press OK to display the Adjust Fax Settings menu.
4 Press scroll down until Rings to Answer is selected.
5 Press right or left arrow to change the number of rings.
Give it a try, Nana, but let Kodak know if you need additional help. They will be there for you.

This 5500s don't receive faxes if you have voicemail. You can still send faxes. Just make sure Disable call waiting is set up correctly in Fax Settings
Hi You need to contact comcast for this issue and get a seperate phone line to which u need to plug in the allinone. This issue may exist most of the Comcast customers. thx
Just found your post and I'm having the same problem. Everything else seems to be working correctly. I can copy, scan, print and I THINK I can send a fax correctly, I should have called the person and made sure it arrived. However, I cannot receive faxes. I have an answering machine on the line, but it is not plugged into the Kodak Pinter, it is in another room. The answering machine answered the call, the FAX noise came across, but the Kodak Printer never picked it up and printed out the fax. I think I have all the settings correct, but the instructions are not very clear. Do you think I HAVE to have the answering machine plugged into the Kodak Printer? That doesn't make sense, but I might try it.
Can you pick up the receiver on the phone and hear the fax tone when receiving? If so, can you then press the start button and begen receiving? If that works, then the fax auto settings are not set properly. Do you have the owners manual? Read the receiving fax section.
