If you open the case there is a sensor that detects whether the head is opened or not that is connected to the open and close lever. Sometimes the tab that blocks the sensor when it is closed get out of alignment or comes loose or the sensor is jarred loose. Make sure the tab breaks the beam.

First clean the sensor tag and sensor head open and tape. Then perform a calibration label pressing the PAUSE and FEED buttons and turn on the printer, release the keys until it starts to move the label. Wait until you are finished and ready to print.

if this is a zebra 170 xi or similar, the problem will be a sensor in the interior of the printer. Don't get scared as this is easy to fix. you will need to remove the cover to be able to view all the circuit boards.
when you have removed the cover, if you check the axle of the latch that you use to open the printhead, (the one with the two pressure knobs) and check the end of that axle in the sidde where the circuit boards are, you will see that it has a small piece of plastic about 1.5cm long by 0.5 cm wide that should turn with the axle when opening and closing.
when the printhead is closed, this bit of plastic should be in front of a small black sensor.
The problem that you may have is that either is broken or became lose.
Please let me know if you have managed to sort this or whether you will need more guidance.
obviously, if the printer is under warranty, do contact your distributor before proceeding to open the case to avoid any warranty issues.
Also, don't forget to unplug the printer from the mains before doing anything to it.

I had a similar situation with Error condition P3/P5. One of the ribbon guide bar screws had loosened and allow the ribbon to drag on the ribbon sensor. After trying the alcohol wipe trick mentioned on this site the error condition stopped. Thanx for the tip....
