Can I sew heavy duty canvas and if so, what needle would I need for my Husqvarna Prisma model 950?

Late to answer, but yes. I've sewn several leather purses and bags with my 6570, which is the same line. I've also sewn denim, upholstery fabric, canvas, and vinyl. I always said, if you can fit it under the foot, that machine will sew it! You have to be patient at some of the corners, when you're going through some 6-8 layers, but it doesn't even break a sweat going through two or three.
I love Vikings and have collected/rescued many of these old beauties over the years. Those models are all metal--heavy machines, and they certainly do have an accessible hand wheel. They were made in Sweden in the 70s. If you take care of them, they will outlive us all.
I've updated to a newer model embroidery machine, but I keep at least 2 6000 models on hand for the heavy sewing. Here' a photo of one of the leather bags I made on mine.

Which machine? If it is a domestic sewing machine, you will most likely ruin it sewing heavy canvas. (Don't be confused if the maker says it's "heavy duty." Heavy duty domestics are no different than other domestics--it's just a fancy name to make you think it's heavy duty.) A real heavy-duty machine would be an industrial machine.

I buy a number 16 for blue jeans and they sew drapes and heavy waterproof material I made some covers for the chairs outside. If you get them at fabricland or JoAnnes they will be able to guide you in case something better is now available. good luck

call husqvana headquarters parts department and make inquiries if the part is still available
talk with the local sewing machine repair agent as there may be spraes available from a unit that they are using for spares

Heavy duty fabric sewing....canvas for tents and awnings, leather maybe, upholstery fabrics.....

I just used it the other day on light canvas and denim is my next thing! Make sure you purchase a heavy duty/denim needle and the right thread and you are all set!!!
