Check on software's CD you received with the camera whether the drivers on it supported your Win Xp OS.

Suggest checking battery and battery contact area. Try a fresh battery. If not working, get estimate from Canon.

Window Vista not recognizing my Canon Power Shot A540 to download

I recommend getting a USB card reader for your memory card.

You should make sure that the camera is on for the transfer. If that doesn't work, try another USB input.

Please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of a card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue:

I have a Power Shot S230 but my new system (Vista) does not recognize the driver for the above camera. I do a lot of pic work and need desperately Bill O'Brien bobrien@onecom.com

In order for Windows XP or Windows Vista to communicate directly with a digital camera, the camera must be PTP (picture transfer protocol) capable. This protocol was developed after the PowerShot S230 came out six years ago. Your best bet would be to get a CF card reader (only about $15 - $20) with a USB connector and use it to read the photos from the CF card.
