Many problems since new sound card

Many problems since I had Sound Blaster sound card installed in May. Programs (Explorer, Word, etc) running slow, moving cursor looks different (jerky), Windows itself runs strange, and audio recently started distorting badly. Have to close out programs and re-open to fix.

A friend checked drivers and I think he said they were ok.

About a month before new sound card, bought an external hard drive and had some booting up issues with that, but I don't think they are related.

I was told that the new SB soundcard would be better than my old one but, even when its working, I don't like the sound as much as my old card (Realtek?). It's sounds "zingy" compared to the more even response I used to get. I also have to dowse the mids (500hz-1k) to cut some annoying mid-range.

Is there a quick fix, or do I just need to switch soundcards?

Operating on Windows XP. I think I read somewhere that SB has some capadibilty issues with the type motherboard I've got.

Try these motherboard settings:

1. try disabling your on-board sound chip thru your cmos/bios setup and uninstall its driver in windows.

2. try changing your pci setting from 32 to 64 to 128 thru cmos/bios.

3. if any of these setup options doesn't work, try asking the store from where you bought your soundblaster card to have it tested or replaced if it's still under warranty.

Sound blaster pci 128 Model CT4700

Yes, you can. This sound card is great, but this card WON'T work at all with any DOS games. And the 'legacy emulator' which is supposed to make it work with DOS applics doesn't work, even though it installs properly with no conflicts. But for everything else, like Windows games (e.g. Doom II for Win 95, Croc, Half-Life, etc), Windows apps, MP3s, CDs, MIDI, etc, this card is great. There is no problem, and MIDI music sound so realistic and good, especially when compared to some 16-bit sound cards.

Need sound card driver

Hi Rana,

Assuming you're running Windows XP or 2000, you can download the PCI 128 Sound Card Driver Installation programs here:

http://support.creative.com/downloads/download.aspx?nDownloadId=255. (They are free of charge, of course).

When you launch the program, it detects your operating system information and automatically installs the appropriate drivers.

If you're running something other than Windows XP or 2000, go here: http://support.creative.com/Downloads/searchdownloads.aspx to find additional driver installation packages.

Hope this helps, and enjoy the sound and music!

Gail :-)

Creative sound blaster x-fi xtreme audio

Windows closing slow means you have a bunch of program that are running in the back ground. Windows has to close each before the system can shut down. To see just what is running in the back ground. Allow windows to completly finish opening. Click the start button, click run. In the window type, msconfig & click ok. System Configuration Utility window will open. Click on the Startup tab. Now you can see just what programs are running in the back ground.
Adding memory can also help speed up a slow pc & keeping the system clean by using the two programs listed next.
First. Run disk cleanup, a windows program found in system tools. Than run Defrag also found in system tools. Restart the pc when finished. This should help your system to run a bit better.
If you have the CD that came with the sound card uninstall the software through Add/ Remove programs found in the control panel. Restart the pc. Reinstall the drivers from the CD & try opening a few programs. Open & run the program your using to play music. Any better? If not try using another music program like iTunes a free download found here. http://www.apple.com/itunes/
You can also try the drivers from creative they may be newer than your CD here: http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/welcome.asp?action=next
Enjoy!

Problem with Windows XP recognizing Creative Sound Card

It sounds like a software problem. Though you did the right thing by entering the bios & disabling the onboard sound. That should have been enough. Did you uninstall the old intergrated sound drivers before adding the 24bit card? Just about all the drivers & upgrades for your 4600 through Dell is Creative software & thats why your having a tough time. I would put everything back to how it was. Re-enable the intergrated sound & reboot! Run system restore & check that every thing is running right!! Look at this dell web site for the sound drivers you have at this link:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_P4_4600&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
If you must, install a upgrade for your intergrated sound. Just so you can uninstall it after a reboot. Re disable the sound in the bios. Do not install your new card yet. While back in windows device manager you should be missing a PCI device. Shut down install the new sound card. Hopefully windows will want the drivers & all runs fine. If still no it could be a bad card (i know what your thinking but it's possible). The only thing left is the regestry is using the wrong PCI device.
