Hi! So i recently found my old vcr and a number of tapes. The vcr is in good working order and plays 90% of the vhs tapes i found. However a few of the tapes do not display the picture or any sound when inserted in the vcr including an old home Christmas video. The time on the player remains at 0:00:00 when these tapes are inside and are played, re-winded or fast forwarded. The tapes still play in the vcr from beginning to end so i know its not jammed or anything. I disassembled some of the tapes to see if they were wound too tight or if there was any dirt and even replaced the reels from the original vhs' to another working one but the tapes remained the same when i inserted it again with no picture of movement of the timer. Also 2 or 3 of the other tapes that were previously working fine suddenly stopped playing like the others and showed no picture and the timer no longer moved on the vcr. Again the vcr is fine i presume its just certain vhs tapes that have stopped working properly so im sure the issue is with them specifically. Not sure what to do and would be eternally grateful for a solution!

After a long period of non-use,of my VCR, I recently tried to play a new VHS tape. It loaded properly, but refused to play it.

Could be the belts have become too old for the unit to function. you could try to take the unit apart to clean them.

I have a number of VHS-C tapes from my various video cameras in the early-to-mid 1990s that I'm transferring to DVD via my DVD/VCR combo device. But several of of these tapes that have the suffix...

VHS-C and S VHS-C are two different animals. Super VHS-C will have much better video resolution than standard VHS and uses better videotape. A standard VCR will not play the Super format. You need a S VHS VCR. You would need not only a S VHS VCR but also a S VHS-C adapter. Yes, Not even the adapter is the same as a standard VHS-C adapter cassette.

You can send out your few S VHS-C tapes to a video conversion service. That might be the least expensive way to get them on DVD. Otherwise you could look on E-Bay.com for either a compatible camcorder (S VHS-C) or the S VHS VCR and the S VHS-C adapter.

http://vhs-to-dvd.com is one video conversion service that should be able to get your tapes on DVD for you. You could also look locally for a video service that does conversions to DVD.

Need unit to put tape into, to play in vcr

What you need is a VHS C adaptor. I did a Google search and found at least 10 sites selling them. Rather than cut and paste, I suggest you go to Google and type in "VHS C Adaptor".

VCR ejects blank tape only

It sounds like the cassette is not releasing the tape so the machine can put it around the heads. This could damage the machine. Don't use it. A two dollar tape is not worth damaging your vcr. Throw it away.

Tapes not playing

Hey do the tapes play at all? sometimes some tapes recorded
on other machines won't play on others. maybe you need to adjust the tracking on the VCR you are playing it on. If the tape
was recorded on a VCR that is misaligned it might not play back
on another VCR. Also the tape may have been recorded on a
super VHS VCR in et (extended definition) mode if so they won't play on just any VCR. If the picture looks scrambled like a
premium channel on analog cable then it's probably recorded in et.
and if its recorded on super VHS tape it may eject out of your VCR.
They don't make these S-VHS vcrs anymore but people still
have them around. There is also Digital VHS they're not
compatible with VHS either. A VHS recorded in et mode will
play on some more expensive vcrs it should say so on the box
or instructions.

My VCR is playing too fast

try recording on a blank tape and setting the tape speed to SP (standard play). you should also see options for (LP-long play) and SLP (super long play). I think your machine is stuck on SLP option. if no-go, look for a manual on the web.

Used a wet VHS cleaner and now my VCR doesn't work right. Help!!

The VHS cleaning cassette possibly deposited fiber in the heads in the drum. You may need to open the cabin and examine the heads and the mechanism for foreign matterial.

Adapter question

There are no such adapters that would allow 8mm, Hi8 and Mini DV tapes to be played in a VHS VCR. Only the old VHS-C tapes can fit and play in an adapter. There are several reasons why 8mm (or Hi8 and miniDV tapes) cannot be physically played in a VHS VCR: 1. 8mm (Hi8, miniDV) is a different format with different technical characteristics than VHS. These formats were never developed with the intention to be mechanically compatible with current VHS technology. 2. 8mm/Hi8 tapes are 8mm wide (miniDV is 6mm wide), while VHS tape is 1/2" wide, making it impossible for a VHS video head to read the taped information correctly. 3. 8mm/Hi8/miniDV tapes are recorded and played at different speeds than VHS, so even if the tapes could physically fit into a standard VHS VCR, the VCR still couldn't play back the tapes at their correct speeds. 4. 8mm/Hi8/minDV audio is recorded differently than VHS. 8mm/Hi8 audio is recorded in AFM HiFi mode, while miniDV audio is recording in 12-Bit or 16-Bit PCM digital audio format. So, even if the video could be played back in a VHS VCR, the audio could not be read properly. 5. 8mm/Hi8 video is of higher resolution than VHS and is recorded in a different bandwidth length (miniDV video is recorded digitally), so once again, a standard VCR still could not read the information correctly, even if the tape could fit into a VCR.
