try this for a fix
connect across the existing filter head to eliminate the need for the filter at that point
now at a convenient point in the supply hose outside of the fridge , connect a common filter assembly and use a ceramic filter cartridge available from any filter supply shop
ceramic removes all taste and bugs and are cleanable by simply scraping the material off the ceramic

LOOK AT THE TOE PLATE BELOW THE DOORS. THERE SHOULD BE A ROUND DIAL UNDER THE FREEZER DOOR.
TURN IT COUNTER CLOCKWISE ONE QUARTER TURN AND PULL IT OUT. THE DIAL THAT LOOKS LIKE PART OF THE TOE PLATE WILL SLIDE OFF THE END OF THE FILTER. YOU CAN FIND A NEW FILTER AT MOST HOME IMPROVEMENT CENTERS OR YOUR LOCAL WHIRLPOOL DEALER.

Cut off a piece of line and go to a good hardware store, they can show you how to fix it. Need a coupling, and a nut and ferrel. House water line goes on one end of coupling, nut and ferrel on the broken water line on fridge. A good hardware store will be able to show you how to fix.

I am having the same problem, it leaks with a filter and without a filter, I even tried making it really really tight. What else could it be?

On my Kenmore, you have to press the light switch 5 times in order to reset the timer on the filter.

You may need to replace the water reservoir located behind the crisper. They are known to flake and cause the problem you describe. They are usually replaced with a coil of water line instead of one larger reservoir to stop the problem.
